Songs of the Hunted

Rate this book
Once upon a time, a king hunted a queen …

It is year 749 of the House of Bloodhurst reign on Atlas, and King Misael Bloodhurst’s thirst for sea women is a well-known threat across the realm, but Anthia, queen of her seas, is sure that she’s clever and protected enough to stay out of his grasp and eye.

Not likely and capturing the mermaid queen changed everything. For them all.

Many years later, a new princess of the Blu throne, a someday queen, is coming of age, as are some of her sisters. Sheltered until adulthood, their most dangerous years are upon them and the choices they are about to make will change the rules of everything. Having never walked the lands of Atlas before, those days will soon change, and neither path will be easy.

When a prince of the land hunts the next princess of the seas, nothing will ever be the same again.

These are the songs of the hunted.

Hear them.

Heed them.

War is coming.

Songs of The Hunted by K. Fournier

This is the first book in the Realms of Glass and Blood Series. A dark fantasy retelling or loosely based on the classic “Little Mermaid” fairytale. This book is the expanded version of “The Hunted” by Bethany Kris which I have read and loved. This is what I am craving for when I read the original book. This rewritten book has more depth, the characters are developed and each one is interesting having to know their thoughts through multiple POVs. Fantasy books are always compelling, and the author was inventive to weave a story that comes from a known tale to make it more unique. The setting of the sea and the land are imaginative, and the plot is constructively captivating. There are a lot of things going on that I find myself Intrigued as I go along the story. The book begins with the captivity of Queen Anthia of the seas by the Land King Misael Bloodhurst and from there we see how The Land King is such a sick, obsessed man. The mermaids were hunted and captured so they can be sold as entertainment. Their bloods are also extracted and use to benefit the humans. From the history of the King and Queen, other characters were introduced and how they are related to them. There are betrayals, sacrifices, revenge, and love. Overall, this book is worth recommending and I cannot wait to read the next one!

It’s been a while since I read this, but I still keep thinking about it from time to time, so that’s a good sign.

I always prefer gritty and dark compared to light and fluffy tales, because these are the ones that truly catch my attention and force me to engage, and this story wasn’t different. It was full of family drama spanning generations, in a world where no one is one-dimensionally good or bad. This book also had character types I can’t help but love, especially since they’re so rarely done right.

I think the true strength of this book was the worldbuilding and how a single man’s obsession ripples through generations and how it shapes and affects relationships and people that come after his actions are mostly forgotten. I always love seeing these ripple effects as they add depth and meaning to events and choices.

Anthia’s part was tragic, at best, but I think in her heart of hearts she knew, her son will be destined for more than his father planned, and that’s why we still get hints and glimpses of her even after she died.

Eryx is one hell of a contradiction most times. He has a cruel streak, but he really can’t help to be a softy around a certain mermaid, and that’s precisely why I love him. He is complex, morally grey, and a territorial idiot. There was so much about his character and growth that I loved, and I can’t wait to see what more he will be up to with Arelle by his side in the next book.

This book is the first book of the Realms of Glass and Blood series and it was a wonderful start to this series! I read the original story The Hunted which was a more condensed story while the Song of the Hunted is a more expanded story of a retelling of the Little Mermaid. It is a darker version that is both captivating and imaginative. The writing is flawless and I felt transported below and above the sea effortlessly.

The background of how Prince Eryx and Princess Arelle come together is crucial to understanding their connection. There is his father, his mother, his uncle and the dark and cruel rules of Atlas and for Arelle their is her father, her 2 sisters and the rules of her kingdom. While this story is long, it is an interesting and mesmerizing read.

It’s sexy, erotic and vengeful. It is filled with betrayals, sacrifices and also love. There are lots of ominous twists and turns in the story as well as menacing characters that add a sense of foreboding through the entire story. I’m looking forward to book 2 in the series.

Ms. Kris does it yet again and what a captivating story this was as it drew you right in from the very beginning and just a few pages in, and I was totally enthralled to the very end.

I have to say that I was a little apprehensive going into this story whether I was going to love this story or not as this is not the norm for Ms. Kris because she is really known well for her amazing mafia romance reads but, I can say after reading this story that was filled with secrets, lies, deceit, and a bit of mystery I don't know why I even thought that in the first place because everything this author writes is just simply amazing, and I have to say that I loved it so much that I didn't want it to end and had there been a book two I would have dived right into that one too!

King Misael Bloodhurts' thirst for sea women is a well-known threat across the realm, but Anthia, queen of the seas, is his latest obsession. Queen Anthia taken and made a slave to protect her people. King Misael is a monster, what he has done to this Queen and these mer-people is heart-wrenching her story was heart-wrenching but, through this Anthia was blessed with a son to love.

I have to say I loved the character's Erxy and Arelle. Arelle was just the sweet and kind a caring type with just a big heart who could be smart, sassy, sexy and flirty.

Erxy was just one of those characters you felt sorry for as even being a prince he never felt he belonged or was loved by no other than by his mother alone, and he also carried around a bit of darkness within him but, once the mother he loved so desperately was taken from him that darkness magnified, and he became more intense and bruiting and down right dangerous and full of vengeance.

What I think we loved most about this story was the battle of wills between these two main characters. Erxy and Arelle she was the light, and he full of darkness and that fine line of love and hate but, not matter what the draw the mystery the sexual desire and tension always remained there between them and that was hotter than hell and their chemistry off the charts.

I loved that this re-telling was a bit dark, as in made the story more interesting and even more intense and even believable that a story like this could actually be true. I have to say, Poe was also one of those characters that was not easily forgotten.

We loved the story from beginning to end and everything in between as the story was quite enthralling, and it had a great cast of characters whether you loved them or hated them it was the perfect mix of both and no matter what you do you can not outrun your fate. I also loved how Eryx also called Arelle his little mermaid all the time because even when he hated her his calling her this was always infused with affection, lust and even perhaps even love and that always put a smile on our face.

"Just mesmerizing !"

Bethany-Kris is brilliant with her mafia romance, and despite the fact that I don't really read much fantasy, I knew she would wow me as K. Fournier, and I was right. It simply blows my mind that someone's mind can come up with such a colorful world & intricate plot as I'm just not that creative, but even I know she's something special. Songs of the Hunted is kind of like a darker more sinister Little Mermaid, and I ate it up like the best comfort junk food. There's so much going on under this sea that I'm not saying one word about it because not knowing what's coming makes it that much better. Her descriptive genius is something to behold, and it felt super real. The twists are coming in hot of course, there's a lot of evil which had my anxiety rising, and maybe just maybe some romance to boot. I CANNOT WAIT for more, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a great start to a brand new series!

It’s been a long time since I’ve read something from this author, and I forgot how much I love her writing. For me, this book reads like I am watching a movie or a TV series. It plays out in my mind so vividly, and I absolutely love when books do that for me. It just makes everything experience 10 times better. It was somewhat of a slow read since there’s a ton of history and world building that’s thrown at you, but honestly, I really loved every second of it. The world itself, and the many characters that were introduced to, have me quite intrigued for the rest of the series. Can’t wait for more!

Songs of the Hunted (Realms of Glass and Blood Book 1)

The writer K. Fournier aka Bethany-Kris has come up with a fantasy world story involving mermen, mermaids and landwalkers (humans). Of course the under-the-sea creatures are beautiful, but the humans capture them for the sex slave trade business. Some men become rich while one, Prince Eryx, falls hard for the lovely mermaid Arelle.

description

This is not your fluffy Eric and Ariel love story, so forget everything about that Disney movie and delve into this complex and mystical world of the Blu Seas. This is the first book in the Realms of Glass and Blood, and sets up quite a bit of back story for the reader. The Blu Seas is governed by mermaid queen Anthia, who is a great leader and protects her people. However, humans, the land walkers, are always trying to catch mermaids, to use them as slaves, to bleed them for their magical blood that keeps humans beautiful and young. You don’t just get Anthia’s story though, you also get her son’s and her colony’s stories even after she’s left them. This book truly spans generations and multiple love stories, and is a true testament to the writer’s imagination and world building skills. There is a linear progression with this book, as you start at the beginning with Anthia’s rule, then moving on to her time in captivity, what was happening in her colony, and finally to her son’s story. This is quite a thick book, but no words were wasted, and I loved how detailed the different worlds are, how well the characters were developed, and even though there were many characters, their introduction moved the plot along and added so much depth to the story.

What I thought was really interesting with this book is that there are so many sides to all the characters. No one is overtly good or bad, right or wrong, but there are different shades to their characters. Sometimes you feel angry about a character (Misael, and OK to be fair he’s a jerk throughout), but so many other characters like Poe and Eryx will take you through different emotions like happiness, hope, disappointment, and empathy, all through the story. I really love this new world the author is building, and I hope to read more of it soon!

This is the first book in the Realms of Glass and Blood series and the first book I’ve read by this author. First and foremost please check the trigger warnings, some may find parts of this book disturbing. Character development and world building were absolutely phenomenal and I loved all of the secondary characters. The amount of backstory Bethany put into this book set just the right amount of details into a vivid picture that my mind could picture everything going on.

Mermaids have been hunted for years at the hand of King Misael Bloodhurts. Though the Queen of the Blu Seas Anthia protects the waters and people. But the humans thrive on youth and beauty through mermaid blood and then use them as slaves. Though the story doesn’t stop there. Eventually Anthia is captured, new characters are introduced and this book goes through many generations, events and love interests throughout.

If you love reading fantasy paranormal romance with vivid details and a story you can’t get out of your head, read this book. Full of love, protection, magic, kings, danger, queens, tension, mermaids, suspense, twists and turns, heartache, struggles, fight, emotions and so much more. Can’t wait to read book 2 The Burning of Atlas!

That was better than I expected...I read it all in one sitting this whole night! ended at 11:52 pm...definitely instalovey bt can't be helped with the whole mate angle. I detest Poe. Misael is creepy. Defeinitely a unique take on the Little Mermaid. I felt a little cringe at the names Eryx and Arelle though...

I appreciate the mermaid angle because I feel like it's an underrepresented area authors have y et to really bring into the mainstream. so much interesting folklore surrounding them that needs to be mined more! Lately all the rage is around "fae" romances because of the wild success of Holly Black's series..which I get...but do we really need another copycat story of human girl meets fae prince enemies to lovers?? No. Give me mermaid and half-mermaid enemies to lovers over that.

Wow! I read this entire book in one day, that’s how engrossing this story was!
I seriously couldn’t put this book down!
The storyline constantly pulls you in and leaves you wanting more after every page. Not to mention that each and every scene was phenomenally constructed, which is no surprise coming from this author.👌🏻🖤❤️
K. Fournier depicted a perfect balance of strengths and weaknesses in these characters, giving them real life emotions, struggles, feelings, and views. A truly superb example of characters coming alive on the page. Lol 💀
I don’t want to give any story spoilers away so I just highly suggest you pick this book up and read it for yourself!
I want to keep this review short and sweet so I’ll finish by saying: I enjoyed every word of this book. Super compelling, deep, and original, I highly recommend checking it out. You won’t be disappointed.

Fantasy has always been my go too, and when I learned that Bethany-Kris was re-writing The Hunted and not only were we getting an extended version but more of Eryx and Arelle again I couldn’t be happier.

Songs of the Hunted is the first book in the Realms of Glass and Blood series and I was enamored by the world building. Learning the history of how the humans and mermaids co-exist. It’s a bloody war. And if you know Bethany, she adds the perfect amount of angst that pulls your heartstrings. This book is dark and twisted in the bottom of the deep blue sea full of mermaids and monsters alike.

A thrilling debut to the series and I am excited to see where book two lands us.

This is the first book I have read by the author and it is an intriguing world that she has crafted. The emotions that the characters portray as the pages turn is compelling and the vivid descriptions heighten the scenes as the storyline unfolds. It is one book that must be read to understand the nuances and also so as not to give anything away. If you enjoy reading fantasy books then this is one to add to your shelf. I look forward to reading more!

I loved every single thing about this book. The romance, the danger, the history of both humans and mermaids. Even the characters I hated, I found myself at times questioning if there was some good in them to be found. The different pov's interwove so beautifully to tell you tales that connected each to the other, that sewed one life to the next. I cried, I raged, I cheered, and was left yearning for what else this series holds.

I HAVE WAITED YEARS FOR A CONTINUATION OF "THE HUNTED" BY BETHANY KRIS, AND TO FIND THIS? WELL, IT WASN'T WHAT I EXPECTED, BUT I'VE A FEELING I'M FINALLY GETTING THAT SERIES I"VE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO. It was nice to read about Eryx's side of the story, and also to know the history between his parents. Anthia's love story was a tragic rape and abuse, and she absolutely didn't deserve what happened to her, but, was it wrong of me to enjoy her unconventional romance with the human King who captured her? I can't help but feel a little s&m for loving it.

WARNING : If you haven't read THE HUNTED, I believe this would be a great prequel to start, even if it does mix in parts of the original book (or the entire synopsis of "The Hunted"). Previously, when I read "The Hunted", I had negatively strong emotions about Poe (Arelle's sister) and let's just say THINGS AREN'T ALWAYS SAID OR DONE IN BLACK AND WHITE. Songs of the Hunted is a GREY AREA relating to every character that ever made an appearance in The Hunted. I sorta changed my perception of Poe when her love story with Tak (her mate) was included here. Frankly, even if you don't read The Hunted, this book itself would fill in all the blanks, only if you want a more intimate progression of what happened between Eryx and Arelle, then feel free to pick up that book.

I won't go into much detail. I absolutely can't wait for the next installment to this series - FINGERS-CROSSED - and see where Eryx and Arelle's love adventure takes them. It isn't everyday your favourite author decides to write about fucking mermaids! We don't get enough of them as much as we get VAMPIRES. I remember when I finished their story in "The Hunted", I was left feeling dissatisfied and thought the characters/or some lacked depth. Frankly, B.K should have done this much earlier in order for her dear fans to get the WHOLE EXPERIENCE and FULLY APPRECIATE THIS MER-NIVERSE.

Like before I LOVE LOVE LOVE the animalistic side of the romance a.k.a the coupling. What's not to love about it? My only lament before was NOT knowing Eryx's side of the story or his inner thoughts. And thus, the author has now delivered, so I have received closure. Even if Songs of the Hunted ended in a soft cliffy, it certainly won't have you tearing out your hair or screaming at author for a faster release.

BEFORE I SIGN OFF....

SPOILER ALERT! Don't read beyond this if you're not interested!

I'm so excited to share with you that Eryx and Arelle's pregnant!! Best news ever!! I mean after all the shit they've endured and the pain, I believe they deserved it and the family they're going to build. I'm such a sucker for the babies! Can't wait for the next one!

My thoughts

Okie Dokie... now that is all out of the way let's get into it.
This will not be a book for everyone. That is okay too because those that read and love this book will become obsessed. This book begins with the first generation and the beginning of the story. This part moved so quickly that honestly, I got a bit confused and was trying so hard to figure out why the story was moving so fast. It immediately jumped into very dark content (SA/Torture) and so it had me wondering how this would all make sense. However, once you get used to the writing style, which is absolutely gorgeous, it becomes completely overwhelming in a good way. You forget that you are reading.

It is told primarily in 3rd person, which is not my favorite writing style but for a book of this proportion works beautifully once you get used to it. The story revolves around several generations of people and it was so neat to watch how everything was connected and kept you on your toes. The vibes of this book remind me of Keri Lake's Master of Salt and Bones. That book is another book that I loved but I know not many people will. This is a book for those who find beauty in the darkness and love in tragedy.

The different type of relationship in this book was completely enchanting, and the author did a great job showing different dynamics. The world-building was absolutely top-notch, to the point I just forgot I was reading.

I am eagerly awaiting the second book!

Trigger Warnings: ☠️ ☠️

Tropes: dark fantasy romance, Little Mermaid retelling

It all began when King Misael Bloodhurst of the House of Bloodhurst on the land of Atlas developed an addiction to sea women. He hunted them regularly where terrible things take place. It was like human trafficking but with mermaids not to mention other darker aspects. The King wanted Queen Anthia of the Blu Seas more than anything. She would make the ultimate prize. When he finally succeeded in capturing her, the events changed everything for those on land and beneath the waves. Many years later, a new princess of the Blu throne has come of age with two younger sisters including Arelle. This time is immensely dangerous for the merpeople and no one is safe. As history repeats itself, Prince Erxy Bloodhurst, Anthia's son, hunts the next princess of the Blu Seas, Arelle. Nothing will be the same again. War is coming.

If you ever wanted to judge an author's capabilities as such, this is that novel for Bethany Kris. So much occurs from cover to cover. She took the Little Mermaid and created a universe all her own. This isn't just one love story. It covers the emotional journey of several characters. Stories of betrayal, survival, lies, changes and love. It was full of intrigue with several POVs which I loved. You'd think with so much going on it would be confusing but she laid out the timeline with incredible depth without being too much. Each transition, whether from sea to land or back again was effortless. My only complaint came in when I got bored but by 40% the action-packed, emotional scenes really amp up. The twists and turns were epic while I was kept on the edge of my seat, wondering when the next twist was coming. The world development was spot on and set up a highly anticipated series coming in 2023. I highly recommend this read. This is my honest opinion, freely given.

I adored The Hunted as it was. Eryx and Arelle are up there on my list of all time fave couples, especially because they're loosely based on Ariel and Eric from TLM. Which happens to be my favourite Disney princess film, so you can see why i might be a little bias here lol.

When I found out BK was re-editing this with more POV's, I was super excited to get more from the world and about the other characters who we didn't see as much the first time around. And as expected, I wasn't disappointed!

One of my favourite things about this story was always the world building. BK can world build like no other, and it's so easy to get lost in them. The 9ine realms is definitely top tier and it took no effort to become immersed in this dark, gothic-esque fantasy world.

All the characters are so intriguing and the chemistry between the couples is so palpable, especially between Arelle and Eryx! And damn, BK must have sprinkled some of them 'salts' into this bc i even found myself kinda liking/feeling sorry for Misael this time around!

Soso happy to have this book. Pretty much the first half of the book was new content, but I'm glad BK was still able to keep the same tone and style because it blended seamlessly with the original content later on. I can't wait to get more books in this series, I imagine the Songs of the Hunted are far from done being told.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Once upon a time a king hunted a queen....
It was the year 749 of the House of Bloodhurt reign on Atlas, and King Misael Bloodhurts' thirst for sea women is a well-known threat across the realm, but Anthia, queen of the seas, is sure that she's clever and protected enough to stay out of his grasp and eye.

This is the first book in the Realms of Glass and Blood. This is a dark book and is about all kinds of fantasy characters. Kings and queen dragons and mermaids, and for sure not a fluffy tale of a mermaid who finds her prince. In this first book you get a lot of back story and I for one am so glad that we did. The Blue Sea is a the place where the mermaid queen Anthia and one heck of a great leader protects her people. However the mermaids are always being hunted by the land people to use them as slaves and take their magical blood that keeps the humans young and beautiful. I know that sounds confusing but you will understand it all and you get generations of stories and love stories and things going on and it sucks you in so hard you never want to lay this book down. We even get to go through into her son beginning to rule. I loved this book and I will admit I am not the biggest of fantasy readers but this book hooked me and I read it as quickly as I could while soaking it all in.

This is the first book I've read from K. Fournier and I'm so happy I picked this ARC. I haven't read a paranormal fantasy romance in a very long time; like several years and I truly missed it.

This book is the first book of the Realms of Glass and Blood series and it's pleasantly surprising. K. Fournier did a great job setting up the backstory and world building for readers. I was hooked from the very beginning and read this book in just two days. I found myself emotionally invested, wanting to see how it all plays out. I will say the author's words made it seem as I was watching a movie unfold, instead of reading a novel. I found myself easily able to imagine the scenes as if they were happening in real time, part of our world. It's a true talent to be able to describe some settings to readers.

This is not your typical mermaid story. The author depicts several character arcs that span multiple generations, but it doesn't feel cluttered or too confusing. All of the characters had their own edges and emotional history, it's easy for readers to feel their heartstrings pulled. If you're a fan of fantasy romance with great world building, then this one is for you!

Game of Thrones with Mermaids

Be prepared. This book is a rollercoaster ride. There is intrigue, betrayal, dysfunctional family dynamics, generational obsessions and mermaids that are nothing like The Little Mermaid. Be aware of the trigger warnings.

This novel starts out with the first generation of Atlas Kings, Misael. He is a king with a taste for mermaids. When he meets the Queen of the Blu Seas, Anthia, he is determined to possess her and he stops at nothing until he does. When Anthia is finally within the grasp of the human king, the Blu Seas are still not safe and the new King of the Blu Seas, Zale, has his hands full with his willful daughters.

I'm not going to spoil the relationship between Anthia and Misael except to say, talk about complicated.

As the novel progresses, we met the next future King of Atlas, Eryx, the halfling son of Anthia and Misael who soon finds himself fighting his own obsession with a daughter of the Blu Seas.

What follows next is obsession, love, hate, revenge, usurpation and hidden revelations that will forever change the Blu Seas and the Kingdom of Atlas.

This book is not for the light hearted. Lots of trigger warnings - abuse, rape, murder, beatings, torture, slavery etc. This book is all about the story of the land walkers or humans and the sea people aka mermaids and mermans. I kinda felt like the main mermaid characters are sorta dumb. At the very beginning the queen offers herself up to be captured by landwalker king and raped/tortured. No thought of self preservation. This theme kept repeating itself through out the book except at the very end. My favorite character ? Mav, the prince of Emerald Isles who might be the only character in the book who might have a back bone!
