The asymmetry between the new social, technological and economic development challenges and the ability to address them requires new approaches to defining and solving problems. These new approaches must be based on an understanding of the holistic, systemic characteristics of the context in which we live – everything is interconnected. If so, do we recognise these interconnections, what metrics are available to us to identify them, and how do we measure our actions to improve the wellbeing of people and the wellbeing of the planet? The quintuple-helix context in which we work and live requires academia, business, government, civil society and planet/environment to work together. This common language should be based on new metrics to measure the synergies that result from our individual actions in an interconnected, quintuple context. In the "Innovative Entrepreneurship as a Collaborative Effort: An Institutional Framework" study it is represented that the success of companies can depend on an #antifragileapproach and that managers should also have #antifragilebehavior. Furthermore, evidence is given that the fundamental distinction between #antifragility and seemingly similar terms such as #robustness or #resilience is that an antifragile object, business or economy not only withstands a shock (robustness) or recovers from it (resilience), but it strengthens and thrives from the shock. As an example, consider hormesis, which is a favorable biological response to low exposure to toxins and other stressors. Applied to an organization, hormesis describes its adaptation to the challenges brought about by a changing environment, making it fitter and better able to survive (Derbyshire and Wright, 2014; Pech and Oakley, 2005). Optionality, i.e., a payoff structure with large, open-ended upside and limited, known downside, appears crucial to any antifragile strategy. This trait characterizes innovation, which drives improvements in human material wellbeing. Antifragility is also a desirable property of an economic system.

10 February Modern Organization Must Be a Destabilizer Only a society in dynamic disequilibrium has stability and cohesion Society, community, and family are all conserving institutions. They try to maintain stability and to prevent, or at least to slow, change. And yet we also know that theories, values, and all the artifacts of human minds do age and rigidify, becoming obsolete, becoming afflictions. Yet “revolutions” every generation, as was recommended by Thomas Jefferson, are not the solution. We know that “revolution” is not achievement and the new dawn. It results from senile decay, from the bankruptcy of ideas and institutions, from a failure of self-renewal. The only way in which an institution- whether a government, a university, a business, a labor union, an army - can maintain continuity is by building systematic, organized innovation into its very structure. Institutions, systems, policies, eventually outline themselves, as do products, processes, and services. They do it when they accomplish their objectives, and they do it when they fail to accomplish their objectives. Innovation and entrepreneurship are thus needed in society as much as in the economy, in public service institutions as much as in business. The modern organization must be a destabilizer; it must be organized for innovation. Action Point: When is the last time you created or helped create a new product or service? Were you just copying a competitor, or did you actually hatch a fresh idea? Try again. This week, Dr Irene Dal Poz & Dr Hamish McAlpine ran a roundtable about co-creating impact through business engagement at the 'Impact of Social Sciences, Humanities & Arts 2023' conference.
