“Watch this space”: May in doubt with calf tightness on eve of Round 1

2023-03-15T14:15+11:00

Melbourne defender Steven May is in some doubt to play in the club’s Round 1 clash against the Western Bulldogs, reports SEN’s Sam Edmund.

Other reports on Wednesday stated May completed light duties at training on Wednesday as he looked sore, with Edmund confirming the 31-year-old has calf tightness.

“At the Melbourne Football Club there is a watch this space on Steven May,” Edmund told SEN Afternoons.

“I’ve communicated with the people that we need to on this subject, Steven May has calf tightness.

“He certainly hasn’t been ruled out, I think the correct phrasing at this point would be in some doubt for the match against the Western Bulldogs.”

Melbourne will especially have their fingers crossed that May gets up for the game given the Bulldogs’ new-look tall forward line.

“It’s obviously a big concern, this could change the make up of this particular game given the way the Dogs are going to go about it this year with their tall forward line,” Edmund said.

“Steven May is critical at the best of times, let alone against who is going to go about it in a pretty unique fashion this year in the Western Bulldogs.

“So there’s been no specific incident I’m told, it’s something that’s happened relatively late in the piece on the eve of Round 1.

“Certainly a watch this space on Steven May, obviously a player they’ll give all the time in the world they can to get up for this game.”

With premiership trio Jack Viney, Bayley Fritsch and Christian Salem already ruled out, the Demons enter Saturday’s clash already down on key personnel whether or not May takes the field.

“We already know Jack Viney isn’t going to play, Bayley Fritsch as well and Christian Salem they’ve all been ruled out,” Edmund said.

“A lot of admirers for the Demons this year, but they’re going to go in just a little bit underdone in terms of personnel for this game.”

The Demons and Bulldogs face off at the MCG on Saturday with the bounce set for 7:25 pm (AEDT).
