Executive Director's Message

Greetings {FirstName},

I hope you will join us for our annual St. Lucy Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church in Manhattan on December 13 (more details below). I’m thrilled to tell you that Fr. Jamie Dennis will once again make the journey from Owensboro, Kentucky, to be our main celebrant. Our very own Board President, Fr. Hank Hilton will concelebrate the Mass.  Providing the reading materials which are so essential to the spiritual lives of all of our blind and visually impaired clients remains at the center of our mission. Fr. Jamie, and all of our patrons who participate in our annual St. Lucy Mass, bear witness to how that mission has been fulfilled for over 120 years. Of course, this cannot happen without the efforts of our staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, and our many faithful financial benefactors. So I hope that you will join us on Tuesday December 13, and witness how your support makes an impact on the spiritual lives of all of our patrons in the New York City area, and around the world.

The St. Lucy Mass serves as the perfect way to begin the Christmas season. If you cannot join us in person, you can participate via livestream on our website, Facebook, or YouTube. In any event, I hope you and all your family and friends have a wonderful Christmas and all the best in 2023.

Gratefully yours,

St. Lucy Mass

Father Jamie looking up at the heavens from the altar at a past St. Lucy Mass

Our annual St. Lucy Mass in honor of the patron saint of the blind will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 13th at Noon (Eastern Time) in St. Francis Xavier Church here in NYC! We would love if you could join us in person this year, but if not, the Mass will be livestreamed on our website and on Facebook. We are very excited to once again have our braille client Father Jamie Dennis celebrating the Mass. Other clients will be involved as lectors. It is the highlight of the year for our organization - a day in which supporters, clients, and staff come together to celebrate St. Lucy and Xavier Society for the Blind. If you have any questions please call us at 212-473-7800. You can also send your prayer intentions to us by e-mailing info@xaviersocietyfortheblind.org

Your intentions will be placed on the altar at the beginning of Mass so that you will be a very real part of the celebration of our patron saint. We hope you can join us in person and/or in prayer.

- Rejoice! Advent Meditations with Mary by Fr. Mark Toups (B1930, 3 volumes): You don’t change your life for an idea. You change your life for a person. This Advent, don’t get caught up in the busyness. Don’t get lost in the anxiety of preparing for a day. Joyfully anticipate the coming of the person of Jesus through an encounter with his Most Blessed Mother. Imagine having an Advent that is more peaceful, more joyful, and more meaningful than ever before. Rejoice! Advent Meditations with Mary not only lets you walk beside Mary during the first Advent, but also lets you get to know her in a way you haven’t before. Rejoice! offers more than insights and information about Mary’s life―it offers an opportunity for you to encounter Mary in the quiet of your heart. Also available in audio, click here for a clip.

- Becoming Women of the Word: How to Answer God's Call with Purpose and Joy by Sarah Christmyer (B1931, 2 volumes): The women God called to bring his chosen people into the world were ordinary women who struggled with emptiness, oppression, infertility, and loss—yet who found strength and hope in God. In her first book, Sarah Christmyer—codeveloper of The Great Adventure Catholic Bible study program—pairs the stories of key Old Testament women with stories of women she has known to show us how we can hear God, say yes to his call, and share him with the world just as they did. Breaking open the scriptures to reveal the historical, cultural, and biblical context in which Old Testament women lived, Sarah Christmyer breathes new life into their stories and makes their lives surprisingly relatable. In the process, she shares stories from her own faith journey and the lives of family and friends to show how the same principles that turned ordinary women into heroines of the faith are true for our lives today. Each chapter of Becoming Women of the Word highlights the spiritual legacy of one or more women in the Old Testament. Their world was vastly different from ours, yet they faced the same questions we do: when we can’t feel God’s presence, where do we find help? When our world is collapsing, where is God? Why should we trust him? How can we trust him? Christmyer simply and clearly draws from the lives of these women important principles that help us to trust—even as we struggle with doubt.

- Living Joy: 9 Rules to Help You Rediscover and Live Joy Every Day by Chris Stefanick (B1932, 3 volumes):  With evidence, experience, and common sense, Chris Stefanick presents nine rules that will empower you to overcome the obstacles that are keeping you from unspeakable joy. You’ll learn why gratitude is the first key to unlocking deep joy silence creates space in your life for happiness rest, friendship, and fun are integral to joyful living and so much more. No matter the circumstances of your life, Living Joy will show you exactly how you can claim the joy you were created for.

The Gospel According to John - Part One by Scott M. Lewis (B1933, 2 volumes): The Gospel of John is a testament to the divine nature of Jesus, the Word made flesh, the Light of the World. Part One of our study (John 1‒10) covers the magnificent prologue of John’s Gospel and a significant portion of Jesus’ ministry. This ministry is highlighted by miraculous “signs” that reveal Jesus’ true nature and his relationship with the Father. Commentary, study and reflection questions, prayers, and access to online lectures are included

Theodore Hesburgh, CSC: Bridge Builder by Edward P. Hahnenberg (DBX1297):  When asked what he wanted written on his tombstone, Fr. Theodore Hesburgh responded with one word: Priest. This giant of a man—a man who advised presidents and counseled popes, who championed civil rights and world peace, who accepted 16 presidential appointments and 150 honorary degrees, who served an unprecedented thirty-five years as president of the University of Notre Dame—could have listed any number of accolades. Instead, he chose his first and most important vocation. Fr. Ted never felt that his calling to be a priest set him apart. Rather, it drew him into relationships with others and out in service to the world. It was a call to serve as mediator, to bridge the divides that separate church and society, conservatives and liberals, the powerful and those on the margins. He spent his life bringing people together. This new biography is the first to tell the story of the spirituality that shaped one of the twentieth century’s most distinguished public servants. It is a story to inspire all those who strive to live out their faith in the midst of a deeply divided world. This book is also available in braille and electronic .BRF. Here's some of our other recent additions:

- Rejoice! Advent Meditations with the Holy Family by Father Mark Toups (DBX1296): Rejoice! Advent Meditations with the Holy Family is a prayer resource with daily meditations that will enrich your Advent by inviting you to experience the first Advent with Joseph and Mary, as they await the birth of their son, the Savior of the world. Together with the guided meditation, this journal will help you to see the marriage of Mary and Joseph in a new light. You will ponder what was in their hearts and minds as they awaited the birth of Jesus and you will be invited to reflect on and deepen your own relationships with others. Rejoice! will help you open your heart to the peace and joy of the Holy Family as you prepare for the coming of Jesus this Christmas. Each day, in a few short pages, Fr. Toups provides you with aids to help guide your prayer: A word - Focus on a single word each day to draw you deeper into the heart of the Holy Family. A reflection - Learn more about Joseph and Mary, their marriage, and the world in which they lived. A Psalm - Each day, you re given a Psalm to pray (just as Mary and Joseph would have prayed) to help you enter into prayer. A reading - In reading Scripture, you find the Word of God, bringing you closer to Mary, who carried the Word in her body. This book is also available in braille and electronic .BRF. - In Sinu Jesu: When Heart Speaks to Heart - The Journal of a Priest at Prayer by a Benedictine monk (DBX1266): In 2007, Our Lord and Our Lady began to speak to the heart of a monk in the silence of adoration...He was prompted to write down what he received, and thus was born In Sinu Jesu, whose pages shine with an intense luminosity and heart-warming fervor that speaks directly to the inner and outer needs of our time with a unique power to console and challenge. The pages of this remarkable record of spiritual communication range across, and plunge into, many fundamental aspects of the spiritual life: loving and being loved by God; the practice of prayer in all its dimensions; the unique power of Eucharistic adoration; trustful surrender to divine providence; the homage of silence; the dignity of liturgical prayer and the sacraments; the mystery of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass; priestly identity and apostolic fruitfulness; the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints in our lives; sin, woundedness, mercy, healing, and purification; the longing for heaven and the longed-for renewal of the Catholic Church on earth. Given the harmony of its content with the teaching of Sacred Scripture, Catholic Tradition, and well-known works of the mystics, it is eminently fitting that "In Sinu Jesu" be published in full at this time (it has been granted the imprimatur). Passages from this journal have already influenced the spiritual lives of priests, religious, and laymen—may it now give light and warmth, consolation and renewed conviction, to readers throughout the world. To hear a preview of this audiobook please click here.
