WHO ARE COMMUNITY ADVOCATES?
Community Advocates are volunteers who can better connect their local sangats with Sikh Family Center; can ethically share appropriate bilingual resources; can be accessible points of contact for someone who seeks to be connected with resources.

Community Advocates are committed to community empowerment, remain committed to diversity and trauma-responses, and embrace engaging on 'sensitive' issues, with the support of Sikh Family Center.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Applicants must be 18 years of age to apply for this training program.
WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT?
The training will be over two days, for a total of 6 hours. In-person options will be explored as cohorts are selected and geographical locations are decided. Virtual options will be offered case-by-case.
WHAT WILL BE COVERED IN THE TRAINING PROGRAM?
Community Advocates will learn about how Sikh Family Center triages cases; what we provide as a national resource center as well as the only Sikh organization focused on gendered justice; the basics of trauma-centered and community-centered responses.

The training will be in English. It will include 101/basic information about domestic violence; mental health; substance use; child abuse and safety. It will cover:

What should we say and not say to someone in a crisis?
How do you help a friend/community member in distress?
What is emotional/ physical/ mental/ spiritual safety planning and how can we support it?
What resources can we connect people with quickly and reliably?
What should someone expect when they reach out for assistance: what are their range of options and why/how do we respect their choices?

COSTS
There is no training fee. Sikh Family Center will offer stipends for participants to partially cover travel and lodging expenses, as well as child care expenses, as far as possible. Training materials will be provided free of charge. We do not wish for finances to be a barrier.
APPLICATION DUE
We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis, with the intention of coordinating trainings in-person and/or virtually based on cohort size, geographic location and availability.
