The Anarchist Lunch
The United Jewish People’s Order presents: A New Film by Rachel Epstein: “The Anarchist Lunch”
When: Wednesday, April 3, 2024, 7:00pm
Where: YWCA Toronto, 87 Elm St.
Ticket price: $12 UJPO members/$15 non-members

Join us for a special evening celebrating intergenerational activism, legacies of Jewish radicalism and the intersections of family love, community and political action.

Two amazing films, directed by beloved UJPO community members Rachel Epstein and Amy Gottlieb, will start the event. The films will be followed by a panel discussion featuring long-time Jewish activists and their offspring, exploring the rich and sometimes complex dynamics of growing up with activist parents -- as we engage in the ongoing, necessary work of Tikkun Olam.

The Films:

The Anarchist Lunch (2023, Dir. Rachel Epstein)

The Anarchist Lunch is a Vancouver-based, 45-minute documentary about Rachel’s 99-year-old dad's lunch group that has been meeting weekly for over 35 years. Lunch members range in age from 50s to 90s (most are in their 70s and 80s), and have been actively involved, over many years, in anti-war and anti-nuclear movements; assisting American war resistors; working to get wrongly convicted prisoners released; as union and climate activists and as Jews in support of Palestinian struggles.

The film's themes are male friendship, lifelong activism and aging. It was shot over 5 years, during which time lunch members got sick and died, Covid happened, and world events unfolded. Rachel’s father got to watch the final film just days before he died in July, 2023.

In Living Memory (1997, Dir. Amy Gottlieb)
In Living Memory is a bittersweet dialogue between father and daughter, challenging traditional notions of remembering and forgetting. This video explores the loving and sometimes stormy relationship between the two and explores the father’s life as an artist and communist, who at age 93, is losing his memory.

The Panel:
Rachel Epstein & Sadie Epstein-Fine
Marilyn Tate & Sasha Tate-Howarth & Dylan Tate-Howarth
Alan Silverman & Karine Silverwoman
