CHAMBER HOSTED 38TH ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF

The Chamber hosted the 38th Annual Belleville Chili Cook-off on Belleville’s Main Street, October 7 and 8. The weather was perfect and the streets were filled with thousands of chlii connoiseurs ready to find their favorite chili.

Many people attend the Chili Cook-off to enjoy the great chili, entertainment, and other festivities, but most don’t realize that it’s the biggest fundraiser of the year for many non-profit organizations. Due to the great weather and large crowds, many of the vendors sold out.

We would like to thank the community that came out to help us make this event a success. This event would not have been possible without our sponsors, volunteers, vendors and participants. Your support helps us carry out our mission of “Advancing Business. Supporting Community.”

HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS THROUGH

OCT. 31 FOR TWO-WEEK WINTER PAID RN INTERNSHIP

HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is now accepting applications for a two-week paid registered nurse (RN) internship to be held Dec. 11-23, 2022. The RN internship program is designed for nursing students to gain real-life experience in a health care setting during their winter break.

Interns will be paired with nurses full time to work on nursing skills and documentation while learning clinical and professional skills. The program also offers new RNs opportunities to be hired in their areas of interest and specialty units upon graduation.

This internship opportunity provides practical work experience for clinical students in an environment that emphasizes patient-centered care, while exposing the interns to innovative and emerging concepts in health care practice.

“We are excited to once again be able to offer this paid RN internship,” said Julie A. Gordon, MSN, RN, CCRN-K, nurse manager of education, RN Residency and ICU nurse educator at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “Nursing students that have gone through our previous summer and winter internship programs have noted the experience far outreaches their school clinicals

because they get to see a full nursing shift and work with the full team of patients the nurse is assigned, and this has helped them develop confidence in the clinical setting.”

This paid internship is open to RN students graduating in May 2023. St. Elizabeth’s will work around interns’ class and final exam schedules.

Applications are being accepted through Oct. 31. To apply for the internship program, visit careers.hshs.org and search “Winter 2022 RN Internship”. Please note there are two locations listed – select the O’Fallon location and click “Apply Now.”

IMPACT STRATEGIES COMPLETES RENOVATIONS

IMPACT Strategies celebrated the completion of the interior build-out of ten additional bedrooms for Covenant House Missouri’s short-term shelter program on their main campus at a ribbon cutting last week. Covenant House Missouri is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth between the ages of 16-24 in the city of St. Louis.

This project created additional bedrooms, moving the short-term housing floor from ten double occupancy bedrooms to twenty single occupancy bedrooms. By providing individual bedrooms for all young people staying in the shortterm program, the organization can elevate their ability to be COVID-19 responsive. Single occupancy bedrooms provide a safer way to quarantine if there is a case on campus. In addition to sleeping areas, the renovations included additional restrooms, laundry rooms, offices, and common spaces.

“We know that we can rely on IMPACT Strategies to make our vision come to life; we can trust them to construct a sanctuary for young people who turn to Covenant House for shelter and support. These ten new bedrooms will do more than provide housing for youth – they will allow young people to heal and grow in a safe space. The team at IMPACT Strategies were great partners in this project. This space will benefit youth in our community today and for many years to come.” said Jessica Erfling, CEO of Covenant House Missouri.

The $750,000 project was funded in part by grants through the Division of Homeless Services and the City of St. Louis Emergency Solutions Grants (part of the CARES Act). Oculus, Inc. is the architect-of-record.

To understand the full impact the new rooms will have, join Covenant House on November 17th and 18th for their “Sleep Out: Executive Edition” event Presented by Ascension Charity Classic (ascensioncharityclassic.com) at Harris-Stowe State University. This is an immersive experience that offers opportunities to learn from experts on the front lines of ending youth homelessness, connect with colleagues or community, and hear from people who have overcome homelessness. More information available at www.sleepout.org/event/missouri.

In September 2020, IMPACT Strategies completed the renovation of Covenant House Missouri’s Wellness Center on time, under budget and with no disruption to operations. The renovation included new therapy offices, a large common area, an intake office, and an exam room.

“IMPACT Strategies is honored to once again partner with Covenant House Missouri to support their critical mission of providing assistance and solutions for youth as they move from homelessness to hope,” said Nick Walker, AIA, vice president of project development & strategy. “One of our firm’s core values is the belief that we are better together. It is a privilege to collaborate with organizations like Covenant House Missouri that have such a tremendous positive impact on our youth and our community.”

That’s when the board identified a need for a controller. Julie’s financial expertise and upbeat personality will make her an excellent addition to the team,” said Joseph Hagerty, Chief Executive Officer.

GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY HELD FOR BEMISTON PLACE

Holland Construction Services is making progress on one of its newest midrise development projects in the St. Louis area and recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project. Bemiston Place is a new $101 million multi-family complex being developed in Clayton, Missouri. Construction began in early summer and columns now stand where the complex is located at 9 North Bemiston Avenue.

“This will be our fourth signature multi-family project with Holland and I am always impressed with their trustworthiness and how easy they are to work with,” said Developer Steve Brown with Balke Brown Transwestern. “We are a designdriven developer and Holland respects our designs as not just a commodity, but as buildings with special character.”

The nearly 300,000 square feet development and eight-story complex will include 237 units, a fourth-floor courtyard, as well as a spa and pool, fitness center, and clubhouse. With 10,300 square feet available for six retail spaces, the development will also include space for a two-story restaurant and will be an extension of Clayton’s entertainment district. The project also includes a three-level 345-space concrete parking structure which is completely hidden from the public view by creative architecture.

As part of the design for Bemiston Place, developer Balke Brown Transwestern chose to preserve the historic Shanley Building next to the new development, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The space will be used as a separate coworking and storage area for residents. Brown said, once complete, the overall development will be unique to the area, by providing residents a choice of working from home or working in the adjacent Shanley offices.

“This development involves a lot of different intricate details and building a wood frame for a multi-family project is not something that everyone knows how to do well. Thankfully, Holland has developed an expertise for it so I knew they would be able to make this project come together seamlessly,” said Brown. “This is just one example of how Holland has continued to innovate and pioneer projects all across the Metro East.”

“This project is unlike any other we’ve worked on in the past, with its innovative design from the developer, this property will include a multitude of different building materials on the façade and high-end interior finishes,” said Holland Project Director Dan Hotop. “At the beginning of the project we encountered soil conditions that required remediation. We were able to work through those issues and are now installing foundations and elevated structural slabs. We are excited to be a part of this growing area and are excited to see what this unique project and retail spaces will bring to the people in Clayton.”

This project is expected to be completed by May of 2024. The architect on the project is Hord Coplan

PLANNING FOR YOU: IMPORTANT END-OF-LIFE CONVERSATION TIPS

We plan for everything! Let’s take control of our end-of-life conversations for our own peace, comfort and dignity. While our fears may make this conversation uncomfortable to start, having conversations about healthcare is essential! Remember, talking about your end-of-life wishes and getting your affairs in order doesn’t bring it closer. Here are a few things end-of-life conversations can do:

1. Leads to improved quality of life

2. Ensures your wishes are followed

3. Provides peace of mind knowing there is a plan in place

4. Relieves family pressure and stress when you cannot speak for yourself

5. Enables families to focus on caregiving and reflection rather than crisis

An AARP article gathered these insightful statistics, “How we want to die is the most important and costly conversation Americans aren’t having. Consider these facts:

• Ninety-two percent of people think it is important to talk about end-of-life wishes with their loved ones, but only 32 percent have done so, according to a 2018 survey by the Conversation Project, which works to promote greater discussion of end-of-life-care.

• One in 5 said they’ve avoided the subject out of worry about upsetting their loved ones.

• Ninety-six percent of people 65 and older consider it important to put in writing their wishes for medical care in case of serious illness, but only a quarter have shared such a document with a doctor, a 2017 Kaiser Family Foundation study found.

• A sizable majority of people say they want to die at home, but 60 percent die in hospitals or institutions.”

Lastly, here are a few steps and resources you can consider right now no matter what your age or situation is:

1. Plan Your Advance Directives, Which Include:

- Health Care Power of Attorney AND Living Will

- Resource:https://dph.illinois.gov/sites/default/files/forms/powerofattorneyhealthcareform.pdf

2. Who should have Advance Directives?

- Everyone over the age of 18 should be doing this. Not just older adults.

- Resource: https://hospice.org/community/advance-directives/

3. Who can speak for you if you cannot?

- Accidents happen. It’s important to choose someone you trust to guide health care professionals.

- Resources: The Conversation Project 2020 Guide

4. You are in charge of your decisions!

- The moment that changes, it is important to have someone who can speak for you.

- Resource: Our New Caregiver Conversation’s Guide on www.hospice.org/community.

Having these conversations with family and friends is an invaluable gift to those you love. Further, sharing where these guides and documents are located is equally as important. The more often you have open and honest discussions, the easier it will be to approach changes or challenges that arise. Preparing for your future healthcare wishes before you need it is smart! Planning all your healthcare wishes, including your end-of-life journey, helps to ensure a more positive experience for health changes that may be ahead. Most importantly, it can lead to a better quality of life overall. If you need assistance planning for end-of-life or need more support caring for someone at the end of their life, call our experienced team today, 1-800-233-1708
