Student Chapter Highlights

AAAR at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) by Tessa Clarizio

Our student chapter has had a very busy fall semester. We started a monthly journal club, where one of our members leads a discussion on an important journal article in aerosol research. We also started weekly writing sessions, where members can receive or provide peer feedback on fellowship applications, manuscript drafts and upcoming presentations. Alternately, members can use this time to focus on writing. In August, we hosted the AS&T Lecture Series. In September, we organized a Student Research Symposium alongside the University of Florida AAAR Student Chapter. We had two keynote speakers, student oral and poster presentations, and a career panel. In October, we had a Fellowship Writing Advice Session with recent fellowship winners to hear their advice on writing applications. We also had a number of social events throughout the semester, including a scavenger hunt, an apple orchard/pumpkin patch trip and attending a local Oktoberfest. Several of our members presented their research at conferences, including AAAR 40^th Annual Conference, AGU Fall Meeting 2022, WE22 (Society of Women Engineers) and 2023 AMS Annual Meeting. While we do not have a blog post up yet for November/December, we kept up with our weekly writing sessions, using this time to help prepare for the aforementioned conferences.

AAAR at the University of Florida (UF) by Sripriya Nannu Shankar

During the 2022 Fall semester, the UF student chapter collaborated with the student chapter at UIUC and co-hosted a 1-day virtual symposium. The event featured two keynote speakers: Dr. Christina McCluskey (National Center for Atmospheric Research) who presented her research about aerosol-cloud interactions in remote marine environments and Dr. Natassja Lewinski (Virginia Commonwealth University) who discussed the human and environmental health effects of aerosols. Undergraduate and graduate researchers gave oral and poster presentations. On the career panel, Drs. Nicole Reimer and Vishal Verma from UIUC, and Dr. Hongwan Li from The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center shared interesting thoughts and the participants greatly appreciated the open discussions. Kudos to the winners of poster competition: Mariana Alifa Kassien (University of Notre Dame), Jonathan (Purdue University), Yuqiao Chen and Jiayi Chen (University of Florida).

AAAR at the University of Maryland (UMD) by Dewansh Rastogi, Kanishk Gohil, and Nahin Ferdousi-Rokib
The AAAR Student Chapter at UMD was established in August 2022. The First Look Fair platform at UMD was used to introduce our student chapter to the UMD community on September 8th, 2022. Graduate and undergraduate students visited our information stall to learn about aerosol science and the student chapter. A coffee hour was organized on November 9th to discuss the AAAR student chapter at UMD and spread awareness about aerosols and their implications for health and climate change. Informal discussions were promoted to inform people of the recent developments in aerosol science and their impacts on our lives.
