How Spring Got Its Name ๐ธ ๐ฑ ๐ฃ
- ๐ฑ The spring season gets its name from the verb "spring." It's a nod to the flowers and plants springing up, springing open, and bursting into blossom.
- ๐ฃ The word itself comes from the Old English word "springan," which means "to leap, burst forth, fly up; spread, grow."
- ๐ธ During the 14th century, the word came to describe the spring season, the time when plants wake from their winter sleep and bloom.
- ๐ Before that, the word "Lent" was used to describe the season: "In the past it was the main word for โspring.' Lent surfaced as โlencten,' that is, โlengten': the season got its name because in spring days lengthen." (full article here)

What is Citizen Science?
What is Citizen Science? Anyone can take part in Citizen Science! People of all ages and backgrounds can participate in projects which help collect data for researchers and scientists when answering real-world questions impacting our planet! Citizen Science can be keeping a bird count of your backyard birds, creating a pollinator garden, or studying the plant life in a river. information you collect can be submitted to various platforms to help your local scientists!
Here at the Maple Street Magnet School, we take great pride in being able to contribute to our local research! Did you know,
- We are a registered weather station! Cocorahs is the Citizen Science Platform!
- Our 5th graders have collaborated with the UNH Cooperative Extension in Stream Safari, Sea Perch, as well as study the Cocheco River at Hanson Pines as part of the Water Tent Project.
- MSMS is a receipient of a School Yard Action Grant. In partnership with NH Fish and Game as well as the NH Audubon, students are learning how to create the best possible pollinator gardens and bird habitats for our outdoor classroom!
- Each year, our students learn more about the concept of a Community Garden through sustaining our own Community Garden here at school! Each grade level focuses on the science of a garden, bringing to life our own flowers and vegetables each spring and fall!
