Citroën Camargue

The Citroën Camargue was a concept car based on the Citroën GS, presented as a two-door coupé with 2+2 seating. It was designed by Bertone. It used GS mechanical components, and was the same overall length, but 6 cm (2.4 in) wider. It was presented in 1972 at the Geneva Motor Show. Historically, this is the first collaboration between Bertone and Citroën, which later produced the successful BX.

Vehicle Overview

The Citroën Camargue made its debut on the global stage in 1972, captivating audiences at both the Geneva Motor Show and the London Motor Show later that year. This striking creation marked the inaugural collaboration between Citroën and renowned design house Bertone, signaling a new era of innovation for the French automaker. Crafted under the discerning eye of Marcello Gandini, the Camargue bore stylistic cues that would later influence the iconic Citroën BX. A sleek two-door coupe, the Camargue embraced a 2 + 2 seating configuration, rooted in the platform of the 1-liter GS sedan. Its distinctive design was characterized by a gracefully sloping rear window, accentuated by twin glass bezels separated by a commanding roll cage. At the front, a curved windshield lent an air of elegance, a hallmark of Citroën’s design ethos during that era. While maintaining the GS’s length, the Camargue boasted an increased width by 6 cm and a lowered stance by 2 cm, enhancing both its presence and aerodynamic efficiency. The name “Camargue” itself drew inspiration from the picturesque region of southern France, evoking a sense of allure and sophistication. In a poignant turn of events, the Citroën Camargue found itself thrust into the spotlight once again in 2015. Following the bankruptcy of Bertone, the Citroën Camargue, along with a collection of automotive treasures, was slated for auction. However, its story took a new twist as the Automobile Club d’Italia (ASI) stepped in to acquire this automotive gem, ensuring its preservation for generations to come. The Citroën Camargue remains a timeless testament to the marriage of French ingenuity and Italian design excellence. Its legacy endures as a symbol of automotive artistry, captivating enthusiasts with its distinctive style and uncompromising performance.
