Gunman at large, bullet hole found in car, shell casing recovered after driver reports freeway shooting on Southfield Freeway

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police closed a short stretch of M-39 at Fenkell Sunday evening after a driver witnessed and found themselves in the line of fire during a freeway shooting

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday, Michigan State Police responded to reports of a shooting on northbound M-39 at Fenkell.

When troopers spoke with the 911 caller -- a 36-year-old from Southfield -- they learned that the driver had gotten on northbound M-39 from westbound I-96.

As the victim drove in the left lane, a Ford Taurus was travelling in the right lane.

A person leaned out of the rear driver's-side window and began firing at a third vehicle with a rifle.

The 911 caller then drove sped away, arrived home and contacted law enforcement.

According to police, the victim's car was struck once near the rear passneger taillight.

Additionally, no one was hurt, and no one else reported a shooting..

MSP closed northbound M-39 at Fenkell and searched the area. One shell casing was found.
