Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith confirmed to Guardian Media that the main suspect in the kidnapping and murder of Andrea Bharatt - Joel Balcon - died while being treated at the Mount Hope Hospital. Reports revealed that around 2:20pm this afternoon (Monday 8th February 2021), nurses at the Hospital found Balcon to be unresponsive. They tried to resuscitate him, however, he was pronounced dead at 2:32pm. Balcon, 36, also known as “Devon Charles” of Oropouche Road, Sangre Grande, was being treated at Hospital for injuries he received following his attempt to escape from being arrested at Jacob Settlement in Sangre Grande. He was eventually arrested at his home on Sunday 31st January 2021, by members of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT). He remained at Hospital until his death today. Balcon was allegedly the driver of the Nissan Versa “taxi” in which Bharatt was kidnapped on Friday (29th January 2021). He was a known sex offender and investigators believe he was also responsible for the disappearance of several other women, including one woman who went missing thirteen (13) years ago. Balcon was one of several persons who were detained by Police after Bharatt was reported missing. Between 2007 and 2017, he was arrested and charged with seventy (70) offences, including multiple counts of rape, kidnapping, false imprisonment, larceny, and robbery with aggravation. At the time of his death, forty-five (45) of these cases were pending. Another one of the suspects in the kidnapping of Bharrat, Andrew Morris, 35, died at the Arima Hospital around 12:45am on Monday 1st February 2021 - a few days after Bharatt went missing. So this is now the second suspect to have died while in Police custody. The decomposing body of 23-year-old Bharatt was discovered on Thursday (4th February 2021), down a precipice along the Heights of Aripo in Arima. She had been missing for six (6) days at the time. Since then, more human remains were found nearby to Bharatt’s body, which suggests the area is being used as a “dumping ground” by criminals to dispose of dead bodies. An autopsy on Bharatt is scheduled to be performed this afternoon, after being delayed from this morning. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates. [Source: CNC3]
