Christopher Plummer, Legendary Hollywood & Broadway Actor, Passes Away At 91

The New York Post is reporting that actor Christopher Plummer has passed away. The Oscar winner and two time Tony Award winning actor was 91. The legendary actor’s death was confirmed by family members, according to Deadline who said he died peacefully with his wife of more then 50 years, Elaine Taylor by his side.

“Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words,” Lou Pitt, his longtime friend and manager of 46 years said in a statement. “He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.”

Plummer is likely best known for his performance with Julie Andrews in 1965’s “The Sound of Music.”

In a 2009 interview, he recalled his friendship with Andrews after working with her on the movie.

“I’m very fond of Julie,” he told NPR. “That’s the nicest thing that came out of that film for me. We have a true and great friendship. She’s an extraordinary woman, professional. I’m grateful to the film in many ways because it was such a success. It is not my favorite film, of course, because I do think it borders on mockishness.”

Plummer spent the past 75 years on stage and the screen, the latter of which covered more than 100 films. He is best known for playing Captain John Von Trapp in 1965 Robert Wise-directed classic The Sound of Music. He won a "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar in Feb. of 2012 for the 2011 film Beginners, and he was most recently Oscar nominated for the Ridley Scott-directed All The Money In The World. In that film, he replaced Kevin Spacey in the role of J Paul Getty, after Spacey had an #MeToo downfall. Plummer most recently costarred in the ensemble of the Rian Johnson-directed Knives Out!

Raised in Montreal, Plummer began his professional career on stage and radio in both French and English. After Eva Le Gallienne gave him his New York debut in 1954 he went on to star in many celebrated productions both on Broadway and in London’s West End, winning accolades on both sides of the Atlantic. He won Two Tony Awards, the first in 1974 for "Best Actor in a musical " for Cyrano and in 1997 he took home the Tony for "Best Actor in a play", for Barrymore

He is survived by his wife Elaine whom he married in 1970 and his daughter, Tony Award Winning Actress Amanda Plummer, his only child, by his first wife, actress Tammy Grimes (1956-1960).  Plummer was also married to journalist Patricia Lewis (1962-1967)
