I was living my dream until one phone call changed everything.

As the second line center for the Arizona Vengeance, my mind has been on one thing—helping my team bring home a championship. But that all changed when I found out my dad had cancer and only months to live. In that moment, nothing mattered more than getting home to North Carolina to be by his side. That meant asking for the unthinkable—a trade to the Carolina Cold Fury.

Now I’m home and when I’m not on the ice with my new team, I’m helping care for my dad. And in the midst of my grief, I find comfort from the one person I never expected.

Calliope Ramirez stole my heart at a very young age. The beautiful, smart, headstrong girl next door, she was my first… everything. She has never forgiven me for leaving her, believing that I chose hockey over a future together. What she doesn’t understand is that every decision I made was for her, and I’ve never given up hope that one day we’d be together again.

Watching my dad slip away is a harsh reminder of how short life can be, and having Callie by my side makes me realize I was a damn fool before. That changes starting right now. Calliope Ramirez is mine and I’m not going to waste the second chance that I’ve been given.

Now he’s everywhere she turns and even more gorgeous than she remembered. She tries to pretend she’s immune to his charms, but when she tries to stand by his side and offer support with his family, old feelings begin to resurface. RAFE!

We already heard about him a little in the last book.

His father has cancer and only a few weeks/months to live and that's why Rafe wants to be traded to the Cold Fury to spend some last moments with his dad.

Also back home in Raleigh is Calliope. Callie. Poppy.

She was Rafe's first everything. They were best friends since the day they were born.

And when Rafe left for his hockey career eight years ago - he broke both their hearts.

And Callie still hasn't forgiven him ...

description

This was such a sweet and heartbreaking second-chance love story!

We already knew that we would probably shed a few tears because of Rafe's dad dying.
But I really cried a lot!
It's all so heartbreaking and sad and ugh!

And poor Rafe and poor Calliope!
They could've been so happy for so many years now, but Rafe left without her!

WHY???

We'll find out. But poor Rafe will have a really hard time to get that second-chance-happily-ever-after he so desperately wants ... Callie is MAD at the guy! LOL!

At least the book is pretty short - so we don't have to fight too hard for that happy end!

I really loved reading this. Very cute novella! I wouldn't have minded a longer book - it was a bit too short and a tiny bit too mushy... but I liked it!

Can we please get a Sawyer Bennett Hockey Netflix series??

RAFE was a really sweet & heartbreaking second-chance-lovers-to-enemies-to-friends-to-forever-ever-after love story! ☺ Run to your nearest amazon for your own Rafe - this one is MINE!!!

Make sure you have tissues handy!!!

I knew going into this book it would be a hard one for me to get through because of the subject matter, Rafe's father is dying and he has been traded from the Arizona Vengeance to the Carolina Cold Fury so that he can spend his last days with him.

Losing a parent isn't easy, now throw in the fact that you have uprooted your life so that you can be by their side, you have a new job that demands your top performance, and...AND the girl you left behind is there. The one that you never forgot, the one that has always been in your heart, the one no one has ever compared to...and she hates you.

4 Understanding What's Important Stars
* * * * Spoiler Free-Limited Time, ONLY 99 CENTS!!!
The Arizona Vengeance Series was written in current times. Sawyer Bennett presented the idea and implemented a series where each of the many entries covered the same time period, had all of these men and their personal stories and it works extremely well with the engaging backdrop of NHL. There was the race to be in the playoffs and how each of the players had to deal with many different challenges. Men met women, love happened and adjustments took place for the better.

It was during this run for the Stanley Club, Rafe was told his father is dying and his time is very limited.
Luckily, the owners of the Vengence and Cold Fury figured out how to get Rafe back to his hometown and be able to still be on the ice. This miracle happened, his father's will not.

Rafe is back home and sitting with his mom. She has been overwhelmed and Rafe's past girlfriend has been assisting her. She has a medical background and has been his mother's support system. When Callie shows up to be there for his parents, Rafe is hit by his continued love for Callie, it never left him.

When Rafe left, he thought he was doing the right thing for Callie, cutting her loose so she could pursue her medical career. Instead, this action hurts her deeply and this is what is remembered at first when she sees Rafe.

Yet, hearts do not forget their mates...This tale is a journey for Rafe and Callie, a sharing between Rafe and his Dad, and the growth of understanding what is important in this short life we have.

This story reflects the important stuff and a moment was taken by this reader to absorb it. It was worth it.

Rafe by Sawyer Bennett was An Arizona Vengeance novella.

Rafe Simmons was a second line Center and vital part of the Arizona Vengeance NHL team success. We learned previously that Rafe’s father was sick with pancreatic cancer, had only days or weeks to live and Rafe requested a trade to the Carolina Cold Fury. It was trade him or he was out, either way, he was going home. He was at the highlight of his NHL career and the Vengeance were on track for a Stanley Cup run, so timing sucked but his focus was off and he needed to go home. No spoilers as that was all part of Dominik, book six.

Calliope Ramirez was Rafe’s ex that he dumped eight years ago when he went into the NHL. She grew up with Rafe and her parents still lived next door to Rafe’s parents. She was now a nurse and was helping his parents navigate through these murky waters. She loved his parents but her anger towards Rafe was still solid and strong. Again, no spoilers as most of this was in the description.

Now on to the plot...Rafe was told with a double POV. It was a second chance theme on several fronts, a lost love and a father/son. I loved the depth of father son. Bennett’s portrayal was both emotional and realistic. For Rafe and Calliope, I enjoyed it but wanted more depth. It was written well, but as a novella, I always want more and this was no exception.

I loved the hockey details. It was accurate and detailed. At the time of this review, we were still in quarantine from Covid19 and I missed hockey. Bennett took me away from real life and back into hockey for a bit. And even better, it was right in the middle of a Stanley Cup - just like we would have been had the world not been put on hold. So the timing was perfect and I looked forward to hockey again soon.

Bennett also set the stage for the next book of the series, Wylde. He was definitely a wild one, so I look forward to his fall.

Sweet, heartbreaking romance…

This novella, set in the Cold Fury/Arizona Vengeance hockey world, was a bittersweet one. Rafe and Calliope seemed destined to be together, childhood sweethearts, “glued at the hip”. A misplaced decision meant they would go their separate ways and now, everything had changed… Or did it?

My heart broke for Rafe, the situation with his dad meant his entire family, his career, his life was being blown apart. Seeing Calliope again after all these years, in this situation, meant he had to re-evaluate all his relationships. And make them right… Calliope was going to see him through this horrible time but she wasn’t going to risk her heart again, she wouldn’t survive it. It seemed their hearts were going to be battered no matter what… Even through all the sorrow and grief, Rafe’s devotion, Callipe’s support and love, shone through…

I loved this bite-sized treasure from a much-loved series. Glimpses of new and old teammates meant re-visiting much loved characters while getting to know Rafe at long last with some tears but lots of love to balance it out… ~Diane, 5 stars

2.5 stars.

"At the time, I thought it was best for her, and I sacrificed my own happiness to give her the best shot at life I could."

How gracious.

Honestly, I am SO TIRED of this trope? Just to be clear, "it was best for her" refers to the hero basically ditching the heroine without even a word of explanation when he makes it into the professional hockey league when they're 18.

No. Word. Of. Explanation.

You know, for heroine's own good. Because she, as her very own human being, is incapable of deciding what's best for her or of making decisions for herself.

So yeah, I am so freaking over the self-sacrificing "noble" character doing what's supposedly best for their significant other, especially with no explanation.

I did appreciate that the heroine held the same views on this matter. But even this didn't make this story much better.

Because even when the dust of that stupid ass decision on the hero's part settled, the love story between Rafe and Callie was still only...lukewarm at best. There was no chemistry and I felt no connection between them, apart from their shared past. But to me, this should be a starting point, not the end.

Also, the writing...I understand that this is a part of the series, but why do the characters need to constantly do a recap of stuff that has happened in previous installments? ONCE would be enough! Those parts felt like such a filler and this was already a novella, so why waste pages on so much exposition?

Another thing, and that's just more of an...observation. With previous books, I often pointed out how tone-deaf some of the plot aspects are. Here, especially with the way the heroine was written, it felt like the author took a speedy Feminism 101 course. So her inner dialogue is full of stuff like "I deserve better", "he wasn't good enough for me, not the other way around", "I learned to stop basing my worth on men" - which, don't get me wrong, I DO agree with.

It's just...putting things like these in your story doesn't mean much (at least to me), if the book as a whole doesn't support what you're selling. What I mean is - Callie would act independent and confident and self-assured at times and then at other times, she would diminish her 18-year-old self for acting "pathetic" and "pitiful".

"The woman I am today is so ashamed of how pathetic I was back then, down on my knees, holding on to his legs, sobbing and begging him not to leave me behind. My face heats up just from the memory of that pitiful eighteen-year-old girl who didn’t understand her own worth."

First of all..."holding on to his legs, sobbing and begging" - well, that certainly paints a picture. And secondly - if Callie is so independent and confident and Feminist™ now, why does she need to put herself down for how she acted when she was still a teenager? Why is being emotional and sad painted as "pathetic and pitiful" and the only good way to be an independent woman is acting tough? What is so difficult with understanding that perhaps Callie acted emotional because of the way she was treated? Because she was 18 and the love of her life, the guy she's known ALL her life, who previously promised her a future together, basically ghosted her?

What I'm trying to say, perhaps in an overly convoluted and prolonged way, is - does she not get to be emotional? Why is she pathetic because of it?

Just food for thought.

Perhaps I'm reading way too much into this. Perhaps I'm overreacting. But I can't help how I feel about what I read and this didn't make me feel good at all.

Rafe's story is a crossover between the Arizona Vengeance and the Cold Fury series, a novella that definitely had me wanting more.....much, much more! Rafe's story was an emotional ride I couldn't devour fast enough and one that pulled at the heartstrings you couldn't help but feel his pain of losing his dad. While it was a book of loss it was also a second chance romance with his first love and the only woman he's ever loved. Prepare for one heartbreakingly beautiful story of loss and love!

Rafe
By: Sawyer Bennett

REVIEW ☆☆☆☆
Rafe is a new addition to the 1001 Dark Nights Collection of novellas. This story is about Rafe, a hockey player, who receives the devastating news that his father is dying of cancer. Rafe transfers home to North Carolina to spend time with his father. There is also a woman here, Callie, who Rafe once loved. He left, and she moved on, became a nurse and is caring for Rafe's father. Now, regardless of past feelings, Callie and Rafe are in each other's space, and during such an emotional time, which might bring old feelings to the surface. But, is it love or hate? Rafe and Callie might have a second chance, but the circumstances are so despairing that it's difficult to say. This story is a highly emotional account of loving, letting go and how those final moments are so profoundly important. Life realizations come with tragedy, and despite the heartbreak of loss, there may be hope on the other side. Rafe and Callie might see things differently, and embrace what they shared in the past as truth. This story made me sad but in an inspirational way, and I warn you now of the happy and the tears. Give it a try today!

Rafe and Calliope were amazing! They had history, and now, a second chance at love. However, with that second chance came a lot of turmoil, too. Mostly because Rafe's reason for coming home was to be with his dying father.

It's okay.

Second chance romance.

Reason for breakup as his career took off was he didn't want to hinder her career choices if she was following him around.
But he didn't explain that and she felt humiliation over the break up.

No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.

Both with others during separation.
Small ex drama for her, very small scene.

It's a novella so everything is resolved quite easily considering how determined she was at the start.

I think for me being a novella spoiled the development of the story.

If his dad wasn't dying would he ever have looked her up or caught up with her while he visited home.

He's been gone years and now he's back it's ' I always loved you'. Not keen on this cliche.

HEA.

Sawyer Bennett is one of my longtime favorite authors because I can always rely on her to write stories with all the elements that guarantee a wonderful read. Rafe, her latest in the Arizona Vengeance (or is it a cross over with the Cold Fury Hockey?) series is no exception.

NHL star Rafe Simmons could almost feel the Stanley Cup in his hands. His team the Arizona Vengeance was poised to win and nothing could make him happier until he received a call from his father letting him know that he’d been diagnosed with cancer and had a few short weeks to live.

With the help and support of his team he was able to move to North Carolina to be close to his father and play with the Caroline Cold Fury. Needing to adapt to a new team and taking advantage of the time he has left with his farther are not the only challenges he needs to deal with, he must also face the only woman he’s ever loved. The one he left behind almost a decade ago, his biggest regret and the person who’s helping him through it all. But can he win her back?

I have always loved picking up a Sawyer Bennett book no matter its length because I can trust she’ll deliver a well-balanced story between emotional depth, romance, good character development and a hooking plot.

Rafe is a wonderful addition to her hockey series made richer by its rich group of characters from past books. My heart ached for Rafe but also felt very satisfied with the sweet second chace love story.

Rafe is novella #6.5 of the Arizona Vengeance series written by author Sawyer Bennett. This is a standalone hockey romance. It is told from both points of view with a happy ending.

I’m a huge fan of the Arizona Vengeance series, but for some reason had not yet read the stories of the Carolina Cold Fury players. With Rafe’s father falling ill and Rafe asking to be traded from Arizona back to the Carolinas, this was the perfect time to be introduced to these players.

Rafe returned home to play for his hometown team hockey team and spend time with his father in his final days. It was bittersweet to watch him and his father navigate past their failings in their relationship and work on enjoying the time they had together to get to know the people they had become. Rafe had plenty of regrets in his past, but they all didn’t involve his father. One of his biggest was Calliope, the girl that got away. Or, more accurately, the one he pushed away when he went to start his career because she deserved more.

Now, I have to say that this is one of those tropes that irks me. The “you deserve more than I can offer” one. But, the rest of the story was so well written that even this excuse for why Rafe left didn’t bother me as much as it could have because the reunion was just so good. These two needed time to become the people they were meant to be before they found one another again, and I really enjoyed Rafe as the more humbled man he became and Poppy as the self assured woman he returned to find. They had enormous chemistry and I found myself rooting for their HEA.

For a shorter book than most of her novels, Rafe still held the same emotional pull as the rest. The hero and heroine were full blooded people, not just brief caricatures with no backstory. It was a sweet and sexy second chance love story, and I truly fell head over heels for both of them.

GAH.... how does this woman make me feel so damn much with every book! *happy sigh*

I have been reading and re-reading Sawyer Bennett for a lot of years. She is one of the few authors I know I can turn to at any time and know I’m going to get a good reading experience. Just about every single time. She’s also one of the few authors I know that can manage to give you a fee-good story and drain you all at the same time. She is incredible.

I knew going into Rafe that emotions were going to run high in this story. I didn’t expect to feel so connected to both Rafe and Callie from the beginning. I was rooting for these two from the beginning. They settled in my heart and just wouldn’t leave.

Man, I really love Sawyer Bennett!!

5 star Review Rafe (Arizona Vengeance #6) by Sawyer Bennett

Rafe is a second chance at love story that ticked the boxes for me. From the first to the last chapter I was riveted to the story that Sawyer Bennett wove and couldn’t put it down. I knew that Rafe’s story was going to be an emotional one but I had no idea just how much it would get to me.

Rafe and Calliope Ramirez have history and now that he has returned home to look after his dying father, Rafe realises just how much he still cares, in fact he has never given up hope of getting her back. Whilst on the other hand, Calliope has never forgiven Rafe for leaving her behind when he chose to chase his dreams in the NHL.

This was an emotional and at times heartbreaking story that will have you in tears, but is also heartwarming at the same time. I loved how all in Rafe was for Calliope and her support of him as he struggles with his father’s illness was inspiring.

The chemistry between Rafe and Calliope Ramirez is intense and I loved the banter and humour that flowed between them whilst navigating such an emotional time in Rafe’s life.

Each time I read a new book in this series, I have a new favourite, they just keep getting better and better. This was an entertaining read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

ARC kindly received in exchange for an honest review.

For a novella, this one sure packs a punch. I have definitely been intrigued by Rafe and his situation with his Dad, as I have been reading the Arizona Vengeance books as they get released. To get his story was fantastic.

I really enjoyed this book and whilst it was an emotional story, it wasn't just sadness, there was happiness too. I liked all the characters and I enjoyed being in their world.

A great addition to the Arizona Vengeance series, and I can't wait for more. Highly recommend.

What if his dad was not dying? Would he have ever returned for her or would have continued dating other women while his soulmate was in his hometown? After all he never once looked back or bothered to find out how she was doing. Not only because she was the love of his life and first everything but before all this they were BFF. So just out of human curiosity and goodness of heart did he ever bother to know more about her.

Having read both of Ms. Bennett’s hockey series I’ve come to think of all the characters inhabiting the worlds of the Cold Fury and the Arizona Vengeance as family. And it’s that idea of family that drives this novella and pulled at my heartstrings a time or two as a star player returns home to be with his dying father. Returning home is fraught with pain though as he has to address the issues simmering between him and his father as well as spending hours with the girl he left behind eight years ago to pursue his hockey dream.

Though this is a novella it’s never short on emotions and I ached for all that Rafe Simmons went through with his father. His father was not the most expressive when it came to how he felt about his son and it led to years of him feeling inadequate. With time ticking away they finally get the chance to say how they really feel and the realistically depicted interludes between father and son brought a tear to my eye. The lone bright spot during his time home was reuniting with his former teenage love, Calliope “Poppy” Ramirez. These two were inseparable as children and as they grew older their relationship took a more steamy turn. They were each other’s firsts at everything and neither could see a future without the other in it...at least until Rafe made assumptions that had him leaving Poppy behind with a broken heart and tons of questions and doubts. The years since led him to the top of the hockey world but he’s never forgotten her and has regretted his decision every day. Seeing her gives him the chance to make amends, explain his actions, and hope for forgiveness. She may be angry when seeing him again...and rightly so...but Poppy’s too kindhearted to make him suffer for long. Despite her early anger she was a silent support to him while guiding him through his father’s journey as her nursing background has him soon relying on her. Their renewed friendship soon added sensual benefits that gave him a few hours of forgetting the harsh reality of his father’s upcoming death as their encounters burned up the pages. Fun and steamy encounters were quickly balanced with heartbreaking truths as his father’s journey was inevitable, and with each turn of the page I became more and more invested in these two very likable characters.

Rafe’s a delicious hero who’s determined to do things right this time. He sees the mistakes he made in the past and is bent on not wasting another moment. With his father he made sure to remember the good times, never made his father feel emasculated despite his weakening state, and never shied away from sharing a hug or tears. His reason for leaving Poppy was a bit silly but at the time it felt like the truth. He can now admit how wrong he was back then and by relying on her strength now he can finally prove himself to her. Poppy’s an appealing heroine who grew up as Rafe’s neighbor before becoming his everything. She loved their time growing up together, cherished each encounter, which is why her heart was broken by his leaving. It was a betrayal that made her feel inadequate and has festered in her for years. She’s a strong-willed person but his leaving broke her and she hated how low his leaving took her. Being a nurse though speaks to having a kind heart and when Rafe needs her most she’s there once again in a heartwarming journey to HEA. Ultimately this was a story light on angst but deep when it came to emotions and I applaud Ms. Bennett for all that she packed into this novella. Readers looking for a sweet and sexy story will definitely want to add this tale of second chances to their bookshelves!

ARC received for an honest review

Woot! Another Sawyer Bennett hockey hottie to add to my collection!

We got a great lead up to Rafe's story during Dominik, and I wasn't sure if a novella was going to be enough.

Oh, what a punch this short packed.

I knew it was going to be emotional from what we had learned, however it was more than i was expecting.

Rafe and Calliope's relationship is never going to be an easy one, but watching them come back together after the troubles of their past, all the while dealing with Rafe's family issues - I kinda swooned a little.

I laughed, I cried (big fat tears) and I loved, right along with our lovelies.

Did I want a full length story for Rafe - sure I did. But I am completely and utterly satisfied with the novella

Now, time to bring on more of Ms Bennett' hockey hotties!

Rafe Simmons was happy in Arizona playing for the Vengeance, but when he learns his dad has months to live after a cancer diagnosis, his team works a last minute trade so he can move home and be close to his dad. He and his dad didn’t have a great relationship when Rafe was a boy, but he knows he needs to be there, if only to be with his mom. But returning home to North Carolina lands him living right next door to his high school flame, Calliope Ramirez.

These two have some misunderstandings to sort out, and though Callie doesn’t want to let Rafe back into her life easily, she can't help it knowing what he is going through. Their families have always been close, so staying away is nearly impossible. As they sort through the pain in their past, I loved watching Callie be there to support Rafe as he navigates the waters of hospice, medical information, and hockey pressures.

For a short story, this had so much heart and emotion. Novella don’t usually pull strong emotions from me, but this one hit all the best emotional buttons. Forgiveness, hope, grief, and enduring love flow through all aspects of this story. I loved watching Rafe settle into North Carolina, even as he was counting the end of his father’s days. This brings the worlds of the Cold Fury and the Vengeance together in the best way possible!

I love Sawyer Bennett's hockey series but I have no patience so when I had to wait for the next book in the series I kind of put them down and forgot to go back to them. But I know when I do I'll binge my way through the whole series. So when I saw this 1001 dark nights novella i just had to read it and have the best of both worlds.

And I have really strong mixed feelings about the story. I have a love hate relationship with second chance. If someone was at fault for the breakup I need a really solid reason for that and a lot of groveling. And in this one I got neither. But then I felt so much sympathy for Rafe I couldn't hate him. Ok so I didn't like him for a page or two, but then damn him, my sympathy kicked in.

Calliope was a lot more forgiving than I could have been. I wanted to scream at her to run away but I also felt so much sympathy for her. She was also losing a loved one and on top of that she was confronting her past.

So while I felt Rafe needed a swift kick in the boys and a so long sucker wave, I can understand why Calliope went the other way. Overall the story really flowed. It was a quick and easy book to read. And I felt a load of emotions and cried a little. So I guess it's a 3.5 for now.

This one hit a little too close to home for me. I'd like to say it was because I too have played professional hockey and got traded due to the best interest for me, heck even for running into an ex and having the romance rekindled, but sadly that is not the case. I felt all of Rafe's pain of coming back home to watch his father die. How hard it was to fit into the new team and to start something back up with Calliope, because in the back of your head despite all the good that was happening in your life, there is the bad and it's in your face every day. This book did a great job of showing that. I'm glad that despite what I knew was going to happen, Rafe's dad dying, he and Calliope were able to find their HEA.

Heartfelt & Original

An emotional second chance romance that was unexpected but oh so needed right now after reading about Dominik.

We first got a glimpse of what was happening with Rafe and his family while in Dominik’s book. I was so sad to see him go from the Arizona Vengeance but I’m so happy Gray and Dominik made this happen.

My heart hurt for Rafe… he had his whole life upheaved in a short period of time. But thanks to Calliope, he was able to work through the multitude of things that were occurring, with her by his side.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella to get a glimpse of what happened to Rafe after he left the Vengeance. I’m so happy that while there is some sadness involved, it all worked out for him in the end.

Eu estava curiosa pelo livro do Rafe, e acho que está novella foi curta demais então tud foi corrido e superficial . Não funcionou pra mim.

I love both the Cold Fury world and the Vengeance and I loved getting to dive into both of those again. Rafe is a very heartfelt novella and was really sweet and emotional. I adored reading about Rafe and Calliope and their second chance. A great and quick read!

Rafe Simmons was happy playing on the Arizona Vengeance on the cusp of the playoffs, but one phone call about his dad's health set off a chain reaction that culminated in him being traded to the Carolina Cold Fury so he could be home with his father and family.

It also brings him right back into the life of his first love, Calliope Ramirez. And she is still holding a grudge for how he left things. She is the girl next door and the one he left behind to follow his hockey dreams.

It's a whole new world for Rafe to navigate, but his new team and Calliope are there for it. But will she just end up being his friend...perhaps with benefits...or more? Is this their chance to finally have it all or will she just help him get through this hard time?

I really liked these two together. They have history and a connection that is easy to find again. They have serious chemistry. Calliope knows her own mind and heart and is trying to deal with her unresolved feelings. She is cautious and rightly so after how things ended the first time. And Rafe has a lot on his plate now and dealing with emotional turmoil.

It is a heartfelt story about living life with no regrets, coming home, and second chances. It brings back some of our Cold Fury friends and Wylde from the Vengeance is featured, but can be read as a stand-alone.

I am a sucker for second chance romances. This was one hell of a second chance romance with lots of emotion and heart. Hang on tight you’ll need the tissues and some wine. If you’re a Arizona Vengeance fan you met Rafe in the last book and know a little of his story. But be prepared for the gut-wrenching romance Sawyer gives you in this short novella. She really knows how to give you all the feels.
