SOUTH PORTLAND (WGME) -- The “Home Alone” program allows South Portland police to check on teens while their parents are away.

Maine teen accidentally shoots, kills self during video-chat with friend, police say

“When adults go away overnight and their teenagers stay home, these unsupervised times can increase the risk of parties and gatherings. Sometimes these gatherings involve alcohol and other substances and create the need for police to respond,” South Portland police said in a press release.

The “Home Alone” program is a free service for South Portland area parents. Police say when you plan to leave your teen at home while you’re away, you can register your home for “drive-by safety checks” with the South Portland Police Department.
