This month
bmaa movie
Lights, action, and… microlights!
YES, the biggest movie to hit the screen this year is out now, and you can view it here. No, no, not that Bond thing; the first in a series of new BMAA promotional videos which will be released through eMF every month – and what an excellent and professional first it is.

“Check it out! BMAA members teamed up with YouTubers Ben Atkinson and Rory ‘On Air’ Auskerry to talk about British microlighting and the role that BMAA plays in getting us airborne,” said new CEO Rob Hughes.

“Watch, enjoy and share – introduce your friends to our world of microlighting and join in the fun!”

Photo Competition
WHO said 13 was unlucky? Not for us, it’s not, with a baker’s dozen of great entries, including one from Paul Brooker in a possible attempt to win a free flight in a Spitfire, or maybe a bottle of beer, and an absolute cracker which earned a maximum vote of 10 from the editor. We’ll leave you to guess which one it is. As always, the chosen few in your next MFVIEW THE NOVEMBER ENTRIES.

Velis: the movie
IN your next MF, Adrian Jones tests the slick and (almost) silent Pipistrel Velis Electro, the electric trainer Deepak Mahajan is using at Damyns Hall. Here’s a sneak preview of the chaps risking life and limb in rather frisky conditions. Of course, it is worth it for the glory of appearing in MF.
Safely back on the ground, Adrian takes a look at the gubbins under the bonnet. For a full explanation of gubbins, contact the BMAA Tech Office.

Hot ships for short strips
IN the second part of our series on budget aircraft, Brendan Digney and Steve Uzochukwu look at the importance of clubs to flying satisfaction, and at Mainair trikes fitted with the Blade and Flash 2 Alpha wings. All in your next MF, arriving soon on a doormat near you.
Keep your finger on the pulse
…OF the latest 600kg news that, is with an ever-changing BMAA link to the latest aircraft to be slotted into the new 600kg category. The first to benefit will be aircraft already cleared to 472.5kg with a parachute, which can now be cleared to that weight without one.

First to apply and get the green light was Flylight, so Skyranger Classic, Swift and Nynja owners can now fill up with an extra 27 litres of fuel and stay legal. Keep an eye on this link for regular updates.
Zara soars on
zara rutherford
ZARA Rutherford, the 19-year-old British-Belgian pilot who’s aiming to become the youngest woman to fly solo around the world, is still going strong in her Shark hotship. By the time you read this she should have been in the Far East preparing to head home to Belgium, but delays caused her Russian visa to expire. She’s now got a new one and is all set to cross from Alaska into Russia.

Interviewed by the Alaskan paper Juneau Empire, she said it had been far from plain sailing. She has had some fun, though. Here she is landing at Nome, Alaska; she also managed to squeeze in a VIP tour of the Virgin Galactic sites. You can follow her progress via her website, flyzolo.com.
Squawk 99
SINCE editor Geoff Hill once rode a 132-mile round trip just to see what a town called Chicken in Alaska was like, he empathises with SportCruiser pilot Terry Kent, who heads for two challenging farm strips in Kent just to find the perfect ice cream. At one, Harringe, he also finds the UK’s wittiest airfield loo. Mind you, it’s hardly surprising, since Harringe is the home of splendidly bonkers KMAC and MF stalwarts Geoff Hall and Paul Brooker.
Mikey makes short work of diploma
AND talking of short strips, Mikey McMahon has a challenging but fun day getting his BMAA Strip Skills diploma, then celebrates with a formation flight with a Spitfire. As you do.
Incroyable!
french alps
THAT’S French for OMG, as you know, and it’s the only word to describe this video of flexwing flying in the French Alps by Franck and Nathalie Toussaint, whose family have been microlight pilots and instructors at Tignes since 1984.

“This is the second generation demonstrating absolutely unique flying that only the flexwing trike can give,” said Ben Ashman, who spotted it.
Shapps on the spot
AN independent panel to deal with complaints about the CAA should be up and running within six months, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has told Pilot magazine. He also said it was crucial that drones were integrated properly into the UK’s airspace.
Highlands tragedy
CONSERVATIONIST Sacha Dench was seriously injured and her cameraman Dan Burton killed in a paramotoring crash in the north west Highlands. They were in the final stages of a challenge to circumnavigate Britain to raise awareness of climate change. Sacha and Rob Keene featured in February 2017 MF for their epic Flight of the Swans paramotor adventure in Russia.
The Brakes of Wrath
flex crash
EAST Fortune QuikR pilot Graeme Roberts talks us through how he ended up in a ditch after an injudicious application of brakes on a grass strip. Apart from a strained shoulder he’s OK, and the aircraft is fixable – and he may go down in history as the only pilot ever to ditch on land.

On the same subject, Neil Hathaway does a nice job of getting down safely after a partial engine failure on climbout, possibly from vapour lock.
Deadstick Dave strikes again
DAVE Lord does a nice job of a precision deadstick landing at Sywell in the Skyranger.
The Moore the merrier
GEORGE Moore’s Dream Classic, the Rotax 447-powered SSDR inspired by the 1908 Santos-Dumont Demoiselle, has taken to the air in the trusted hands of Bill Brooks. In the best traditions of aviation, he brought it back down again, too.

“Bill did several circuits, and it flies very well. I was reminded that he headed up the British team in the American Junkyard Wars challenge in 2003, successfully designing, building and flying a biplane from scrap in 20 hours,” said George. Indeed. The whole two-hour challenge is available here, and very watchable it is, too.
Hankies out, chaps
FOR those who haven’t seen The Man Who Wanted To Fly, the heartwarming story of octogenarian rural Irish bachelor Bobby Coote dreaming of taking to the sky, it’s now available on YouTube, spotted by Anthony Campbell.

So pour a glass of Old Sparrowfart, open the Hobnobs, park a pack of tissues, and get ready for a manly sniffle.
NMBF
more red bull nonsense
Do not try this at home
Slaloming through a wind farm, flying through a hangar and along a tunnel, hitching a lift on a diving plane: here are five things that proper pilots with nerves of steel get up to.

Spotted by our new CEO Rob Hughes on a Saturday when he should really have been lying down in a darkened room after a rather hectic first week in the job. Read all about it in your next MF.
Microlights rock. Bruce says so
IRON Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson has a commercial airline pilot’s licence and thousands of hours in everything from his 757 to a Bücker Jungmann, and he thinks modern microlights are miles better than traditional GA machines. Rock on, Bruce.
And… breathe
WE like Ryan the missionary bush pilot here at MF Global HQ for the way he flies into impossible mountain strips in Papua New Guinea while sounding as cool as a penguin’s bottom.

Atmosphere electric at Boscombe
rr spirit of innovation
ROLLS-ROYCE’S stunning Spirit of Innovation electric aircraft has had its maiden flight from the MoD’s Boscombe Down airfield. With a motor producing 536hp, it’s designed to reach over 300mph and beat the current electric world speed record of 210mph, set by Siemens in 2017 with an Extra 330LE.
Growing old: compulsory. Growing up: optional
PAUL Berge of AVweb as brilliant as ever on the few advantages of being an adult. No homework and the chance to fantasise about buying a Fokker DVII, for example.
And… rotate
THINK you’ve got problems with weight and balance with two fat blokes and too much fuel on board? Spare a thought for the pilot of this Boeing 737, which rotates after dropping off a bunch of hefty American footballers.
and finally...
jet homebuild
Dear Santa…
KITPLANES editor Paul Dye take us on a flight in the SubSonex mini-jet he built.
