SAVE YOUR STADIUM - City of Vincent proposes to wipe out a WA sporting landmark

The City of Vincent has released concept designs and plans, proposing the demolition of the iconic grandstand which forms an integral part of Litis Stadium in the Perth suburb of Mt Hawthorn.

Built for the Perth Empire Games in 1962, the grandstand overlooked the former Lake Monger Velodrome, which has hosted scores international cycling competitions.

In the 1970s Floreat Athena moved from Perry Lakes to the velodrome which became its new home. 

In the 1980s the passionate and proud members of Athena built a thriving clubroom to stand next to the grandstand. 

In the late 90s, the Athena members with assistance from the State Government renovated the velodrome into arguably what is the best state league soccer facility in WA.

For more than 60 years the grandstand has been a hub of excitement, which has allowed tens of thousands of sport lovers witness a myriad of athletic achievements and milestones, including the unearthing of Athena's favourite sons and Socceroos, Stan Lazaridis and Bobby Despotovski.

The City of Vincent wants to call time on the grand old lady and has made it loud and clear that history does NOT matter and has no place in the local community.

This flies in the face of the apparent support shown by City of Vincent Councillors in 2019, where they happily stood shoulder to shoulder in front of the grand stand with the board members of the Athena Football Club who successfully negotiated a 10-year lease extension. 

But now, in fewer than 18-months those same councillors are happy to see a wrecking ball come through one of WA's historic buildings.
