CSAM-SMCA 2024 Student Bursaries

CSAM-SMCA offers bursaries to encourage Canadians to learn about and pursue a career in the field of addiction medicine. All bursaries are open to Canadian college and university students who:
  • Show an interest in addiction medicine
  • Attend a Canadian college or university
  • Are enrolled in a healthcare-related program of study
  • Have the written support of their program/supervisor
  • Are 18 years of age or older
Special consideration will be given to applicants who have not previously received a bursary. Deadline for all bursary applications is May 31, 2024.

The Full Conference Travel Bursary covers up to $1,500 in travel costs for learners who live more than one hour from the conference location. Each successful bursary applicant will receive:

This bursary covers the cost of attending the CSAM-SMCA Fundamentals of Addiction Course. Presented by seven leading Canadian addiction medicine physicians , the course provides trainees, residents and clinicians with a solid foundation for continued learning in addictions care and treatment. Each successful bursary applicant will receive:

Karen Mellor PhotoKaren Marie Mellor was the CSAM-SMCA National Executive Assistant until her death in 2019. She was instrumental in the society’s growth, driving key changes that allowed our organization to thrive. In October 2019, at the age of 56, Karen passed away after struggling with an illness related to smoking.

In her memory, the CSAM-SMCA Board of Directors established the Karen Mellor Award. The award will be given to a student or a practicing clinician who has demonstrated passion and work in the area of smoking cessation research, clinical care, education or other experience related to nicotine use disorder. The recipient of the CSAM-SMCA Karen Mellor Award will receive:
