Getting locked in a White House bathroom and inadvertently causing issues on an Air Force base's military network – sometimes that is what it takes to conduct cutting-edge research to protect the health of hundreds of millions of people. The United States and the world have experienced a series of pandemics from Chikungunya, Zika, Ebola and now COVID-19. Accordingly, the U.S Department of Homeland Security (US-DHS) is pursuing initiatives to predict, forecast and assess policies to rapidly mitigate emergent epidemics. The US-DHS has funded Miami University to design and develop such a software system called Foresight, which enables forecasting of emergent epidemics and assessment of policies to mitigate epidemics. The policy-assessments are then used to inform decision-makers in DHS, FEMA and US-CBP. This webinar provides an inside look into the science, computing power and experiences of developing Foresight along with some inside scoop on some of the interesting and the rather unique experiences from this effort.

Dr. Dhananjai (DJ) Rao
Associate Professor, Computer Science and Software Engineering

Dr. Dhananjai (DJ) Rao is an associate professor in the Computer Science & Software Engineering department of Miami’s College of Engineering and Computing. He teaches operating systems and high performance computing courses in the department and leads the Grand Challenges Scholars Program. His current research areas include parallel and cloud computing with applications to epidemiology, bioinformatics, and social sciences. Dr. Rao received his B.E. in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of Madra, India and his M.S. and PhD. in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.
