Town council holds first virtual meeting

Mayor Ray Ralph and the rest of council participated in the meeting via conference call, and social distancing protocols were in place for staff who attended the meeting. No members of the public were in attendance.

Tony Kulbisky, chief administrative officer for the Town of Devon, stated in an email to the Devon Dispatch that this was the town’s first virtual council meeting. He added that administration will be seeking different ways to conduct future council meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure council can continue to meet on a regular basis and make important governance decisions.

During the meeting on Mar. 23, council declared that a State of Local Emergency exists within the Town of Devon with respect to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. The declaration authorized full powers and authority to the Emergency Management Agency.

Council also voted to approve the new Peace Cemetery Master Plan 6-1. Coun. Sandy Koroll was opposed, stating she was against raising the cemetery’s service prices to be competitive with nearby communities. Council voted unanimously to approve second and third reading of the Peace Cemetery bylaw 942/2020.

Council unanimously approved second and third readings of amendments to the Community Standards bylaw 940/2020 to allow for the inclusion of edible cannabis products now that they are widely available. The consumption of edibles is under the same restrictions as the smoking of cannabis products within the Town of Devon. There were no changes to how the bylaw is enforced.
