Lake Superior is trending on Twitter, and it's not for the reasons you might think

The largest of the Great Lakes has taken on a new title: the most Twitter famous.

Although the Lake Superior account has been around since 2009, and has seen its fair share of viral tweets, its take on the Roe v. Wade decision has launched it to superstardom.

"This lake vehemently stands with women having the right to choose," it tweeted Friday. 

On Tuesday, the account was trending nationwide on Twitter. 

When users, like conservative activist Tom Fitton disagreed, Lake Superior was not afraid to clap back.

The original tweet garnered 11,000 retweets, 90,000 likes, plus viral TikTok videos about the account.

The account had around 40,000 followers before it Friday, according to the Wayback Machine. Now, just a few days later, it has surpassed 159,000. 

Even people like Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and actor George Takei joined the fun. 

Up until June 24, when Roe v. Wade was overturned, the account had stayed away from most political topics — aside from water policy. The account generally serves two main purposes: a fun escape with a comedic approach and a place to highlight the importance of water quality and the environment.

In the past, Lake Superior frequently retweeted beautiful pictures of itself, findings from new scientific studies and water safety tips.
