Maldives President in India Highlights: Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari today received Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. The Maldivian President was accompanied by Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer, Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail, Foreign Secretary Ahmed Latheef, and a high-level delegation. The Governor presented a Tea set hand-painted by tribal artists from Maharashtra to the visiting dignitary.
Meanwhile, a huge traffic jam was reported at Mumbai’s Western Express Highway on Wednesday morning due to the VVIP movement of Solih. The Mumbai Traffic police had put out a traffic alert late on Tuesday night and many motorists who were not aware got stuck in the traffic for over an hour. The traffic movement continued to be slow till afternoon.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India will extend an additional $100 million line of credit to the Maldives. Following bilateral talks between PM Modi and President of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, India and Maldives signed six pacts to facilitate cooperation in capacity building, cyber security, housing, disaster management, and infrastructure. Solih also reiterated his country’s “firm commitment to deal with the threat of terrorism.”
Solih’s visit to India comes amid his widening political rift with Mohammed Nasheed, former President of the island nation and the current parliament speaker. Both Solih and Nasheed are senior leaders of the Maldivian Democratic Party.
