There's always a feeling of trepidation when one of your favourite authors release a book in one of your favourite series, especially when the series in question is up to Book 4. Happily, I can breath a sigh of relief as Nikita Slater once again knocks it out of the park and ticks all of the boxes that make her books amongst my absolute favourites. I love this series and while each of its books have similarities (cartel/mafia, strong female lead, dominant and possessive male lead, a bit of violence and grit, etc.), they all hold up on their own without the newer installments feeling like I'm reading a rehashed version of the earlier stories. If you haven't read any of the other books in this series, you can absolutely get away reading this one as a standalone. While The Red Queens starts where Book 3 finished and there are small crossovers with a couple of characters, they don't have a big impact on this story apart from a couple of spoilers about Born a Queen. Quick trigger warnings in case anyone needs them: sexual and physical abuse (in Desi's past both as a minor and as she grew up), kidnapping, captivity, dubious consent a couple of times, violence and body mutilation - this wasn't overly graphic and didn't drag on, but it hits you in the face from the start...which I loved lol.

Book 4 focusses on Desiree (Desi), the former second in command of a Mexican cartel, and Giovanni (Gio), a powerful Venetian mafia boss. While visiting Raina, a main character from Book 3, Gio gets to see Desi in action as she tries to take out a rival cartel in revenge for the death of her lover and boss. Seeing a strong, powerful and skillful woman he could build a life with and produce heirs, he makes a deal to take her off Mateo's hands and brings her to Italy with him. The relationship between Desi and Gio is melt the pages hot. To be honest, I was worried she was going to annoy me by being a bit over the top and aggressive but I absolutely loved Desi's character. She was kick-butt, taking names and no prisoners, comfortable with her strength and intelligence while also showing bouts of vulnerability and anxiety. I loved how she weighed up each situation when her freedom was taken, with her capitulation playing out cleverly and in a way that I found really satisfying to read (I hate when female leads just give in because the guy is hot, rich, etc.) She was realistic and her background of abuse wasn't glossed over, being written about tastefully (which is one of the many reasons I love this author - she dabbles on the darker side of life and her books always have grit, but they're not corny and don't make light of serious issues).

Desi matched perfectly with Giovanni, who's almost twenty years her senior (take note, age gap fans - I'm not usually, but it didn't bother me here). He was suave, sophisticated, firm but fair and compassionate to Desi, jealous and possessive and with a delicious underlying violent character that cropped up every now and then. With a deceased wife that didn't like his criminal world and a personal life that's become stagnant, Desi is a welcome change that he's determined to keep, taking her captive in order to tame her. While the latter part of this would generally make me cringe, it's written well into the plot with Gio wanting a partner, not a slave. The book focusses on their developing relationship and the threats that may come their way, including Gio's impulsive and idiotic son. There was plenty going on in the book to ensure I didn't put it down, providing a great escape that didn't push the envelope too far considering the tropes involved (another reason I love this author). The smexy times are super hot, with Gio being dominant in all aspects of his life, and the fact that the relationship issues weren't dragged out made it a really enjoyable read for me. There's an epilogue at the end which was a fabulous touch that I loved and made me sad to see the end of this power couple.

'Like you, I live for the fight' is a quote from Gio that pretty much sums up the premise of the book and the relationship between him and Desi. If you're chasing a darker mafia read that has fireworks from the get-go, do yourself a favour and pick this book up. Desi and Gio's relationship is tempestuous but works perfectly as she tries to figure out where her new life is taking her. It's another terrific read in this series and will be getting reread by me for sure. I loved it and it's one of my top reads for the year.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Giovanni Savino is the Italian Godfather. He hold his mafia empire with merciless efficiency. When he sees Desi in shackles he sees the female half of himself. Brutal, deadly, obsessed. She should be put down like the rabid animal she is, but Giovanni is up for the challenge of civilizing the feral cartel queen. She is the beast to her own beauty and he will tame her. He will rule the kingdom with his red queen at his side.

This is the fourth book in The Queens Series by Nakita Slater but it can be read as a standalone. It is also a dark romance and you will want to heed the warning in the front of the book because it will contain triggers for some readers. When I read the blurb for this book I just knew that I had to read it. This is the story of Desiree who is the former second in command of a Mexican cartel, and Giovanni, who is a powerful Venetian mafia boss. When he goes to visit Raina he gets to see Desi in action as she tries to take out a rival cartel. She is doing to as revenge for the death of the man she loved who was her boss too because they killed him. What Gio sees is a strong, fierce woman who is perfect for him. The perfect woman to marry and raised kids with, the guy needs a heir after all. He really likes that he is looking at a strong, powerful, and skillful woman and knows that no matter what he wants to take her off Mateo's hands and build a life with her in Italy. I loved these two characters and I really loved that Gio was the perfect match for Desi in more ways that one. She is really his equal in the things that she can do but she is also a total bad butt who kicks butt and ask questions later. She is a woman who is comfortable in her own skin, has many methods of madness as I am going to call them, but she has this side to her that is sweet and venerable and almost at times I would call her anxious. Gio might be twenty years her older than her but he is very sophisticated, firm but fair, but he has this side too that can be jealous and possessive especially when it came to Desi. But because of who he is he also has this violent side that comes out to play too and I loved that he didn't try to hold Gio back when hers come out to play too. See, perfect for each other. They are for sure one smoking hot couple who have quiet the story to tell. I think I laid this book down one time and that was only because it was in the wee hours of the morning and I was reading the same sentence over and over again. I don't want to tell you their story for fear that I might accidently give a spoiler and no one likes those.

This was my first time reading Nikita Slater. I can't believe I have not read on of her books before. But I really l.iked this book and I liked her writing style too. It is a book that you need to read and then if your like me you will want to go back and read the three that come before The Red Queen. I can't wait to read another book by this author and add another list to my favorite authors because I know that is what will end up happening.

This was a new to me author and one I would definitely be interested in reading more from in the future.
This book conflicted me as I adored the fierceness of the female main character and the basis of the plot but it took most of the book for it to completely hold my interest and love every facet of it.
And I can't put my finger on the reason why (could just be the head space I'm in) but the male main character definitely annoyed me more than once with his rigidness (for lack of a non spoilery word) when she had obviously suffered for far too long.
In saying all of this the last part of the book was worth every niggling thing.

OMG! This was one intense read full of pain and sorrow and so much emotion topped with such cruelty, this story was heartbreaking.

Desi was our favorite character, so brave and strong and a survivor it is a wonder how she survived the life she led, good thing she was provided the tools to protect herself was somewhat of a saving grace. What a fighter, love her gumption and no matter the cruel things down to her, she was still capable of love and true friendship. One thought comes to mind, what a kicka** character who was totally a bada**.

Gio we had mixed feeling about you but, once you got your head out of your butt we thought you were just what Desi needed a protector and lover and someone who might just give our girl something she has never experienced and that his love as she has known nothing but violence and cruelty her whole life since she was ten years old.

The story had non-stop drama, tons of chemistry and tons of hot sexy scenes along with a heart-wrenching story about years of abuse and the one woman who survived it all.

Loved this story, and at times it just made you want to break down and cry. Gio and Desi made the perfect mafia couple, hands down one of our favorite couple belonging to the mafia crime world. Our favorite scene happened right before something big went down and in that scene Desi proved once again she was one heck of a bada** woman. The ending perfect for this couple.

This was a first time author for us, and we were highly impressed, so much, so we planned to read the rest of this series. Loved the characters and this was one awesome read that kept you glued to the pages the entire time.

*Mental note, this story is very dark and has triggers, so beware of that as the story contains rape, torture and so much more*

Nikita Slater knocked it out of the park with Gio and Desi’s enemies to lovers story. It was entertaining to watch Desi’s fiery determination to survive while pushing all of Gio’s buttons. Their push/pull dynamic mixed with explosive chemistry kept me completely captivated from beginning to end. It was dark and twisted with just the right amount of steamy. I highly recommend adding it to your TBR!

This is a great mafia romance. The world-byilding is fantastic. I wasn't expecting to like these characters as much as I did but they were great, especially, Gio.

There were a few areas that I wished had been fleshed out but this was still a great addition to this world.

This story begins with Desiree Garza looking at her died lover, who also kidnapped her. Kidnapped Desiree from her mother at the age of (10) ten years old and made her a weapon in a cartel. She directs her attention on, her loyalty to getting revenge on who destroyed her world, and lover. Desiree, she was resilient, strong, brave, loyal, kind, and deadly. Six-month later she was captured the details you have to read, and she meets a man he is friends with Mateo and Raina Gutierrez, YES! They were her target. The man was called the Godfather of Italy. his name is Giovanni Savino of the Italian Savino crime family. Giovanni Savino was staying with Mateo and Raina at the time. He takes Desiree with him back to Italy. That when the story keeps getting better as you read it so entreating, entertaining, seductive, passionate, it keeps you reading their cat and mouse drama, the love scenes, the reason Gio wants Desiree is just too good. You have to read why? And this is a couple that in their 30s and 50s. I enjoyed the ending so much. The action inside is great, this book is fantastic. This book is coming out December 26, 2021

The Red Queen was a truly phenomenal read that had me falling in love with the author’s style of writing. Nikita Slater's books have been on my tbr for so long and I’m so happy I finally read one. I know for certain, it will not be my last.
Giovanni Savino could be seen as the Italian Godfather but was actually a Venetian mafia boss. When he goes to visit another member of the organization, he witnessed Desiree try to exact revenge on the party responsible for killing her boss and lover. She was the second in command to the Mexican cartel. Now she’s in shackles and he sees her as his equal or the female version of himself. In his words, “She is the beast to her own beauty and he’s determined to tame her.” It’s rather obvious she was made to stand at his side as the Red Queen. She will learn to bend her animalistic tendencies to his advantage. He will show her what love is despite the fact she insists her heart beats for no man. He will rule his kingdom with his red queen by his side.
This dark, age gap, romantic trope had everything my dark-loving heart craves with just enough angst to make my heart truly happy. Despite their differences at first, Gio and Desi couldn’t be more perfect for each other. I loved his willingness to fight to have her and make her understand how right they were together. The heat between them was smoking! I had a really difficult time putting this book down for any length of time. I highly recommend you give this read a try but please heed the dark trigger warnings that come along with it. This is my honest opinion, freely given.

So not your typical dark mafia read
It is a complete standalone within the series. The characters and some scenes interconnect between books but the important scenes are retold for the reader
This has a crescendo like flow to the storytelling and at times felt a little slow (not for lack of action)
Do not misunderstand, it starts out graphic, with lots of fast-paced action, there was just something that did not click for me until about halfway. ( I am weird that way)
I am not telling you the ending, that is a surprise for you, but it is a bloody good ending

I really liked how unflappable Giovanni seems
He can see past all the facades though some is more staying a step ahead and a lot of it is a smokescreen
You don't become the Godfather without being feared
Desiree, in his eyes, was the perfect companion. She had been raised to follow commands, she was in all definitions a trained attack dog. Her fighting skills have been honed with straight fight or die tactics for over 20 years in her mind every fight was a life or death situation
She was a mindless heartless machine
Until he showed her she could have more

This has so much substance to it
I did not even think about the age difference most of the time
They just fit.
There are multiple triggers it is a dark mafia so if you are not one to play in the deep end this is not where you want to learn to sink or swim

This is a new author for me and have to say I'll definitely be going back to read some more even thou this is part of a series it's a standalone.

Here we have Desiree ( Desi ) she's the former second in command to a Mexican cartel and Giovanni ( Geo ) a very powerful mafia boss. Desi goes after her rival cartel in revenge for the death of her lover and boss, Geo witnesses what Desi does and seeing that she's a strong, powerful woman wants her in his life as his lover. He makes a deal to take her off Mateo's hands and takes her to Italy to be with him. I mean the chemistry between these two if off the scale hot my kindle burnt my hands a few times lol.

These two matched each other perfectly and even thou Gio is almost twenty years her senior, I honestly didn't even think about it. These two are quite possibly one of my favourite power couples that I've read about in a long time. I'm gonna go back and read the rest in this series as if they are any good as this book I know I'm gonna love them.

Nikita Slater has once again written an incredible story of a child that was taken at age 10 by a monster from a brutal cartel. She was beaten and raped her entire life by him and his men until he was killed. Out of this tragic life she lived she became strong and basically "I am woman hear me roar", she could take a grown man down to his knees, kill a team of men and is determined never to be a victim ever again. This is a love story between the Italian Godfather, Giovanni Savino and Desi. I read this book in a day, spell-bound, wondering and guessing how this was going to turn out, she is
is independent, and a violent prisoner when Giovanni takes her to his home. he's got a plan and I loved it. She is like a ticking time bomb waiting to go off on someone. Nikita Slater is one of my favorite authors and has definitely outdone herself this time. I say this about every one of her books. I promise you will not be disappointed. READ THIS BOOK TODAY!!!

This is the first book I have read by Nikita Slater and I just have to say that I have definitely found a new favorite author . I started this amazing book early this morning as I was sick for the last few days and trust me when I say you will not be able to stop once you start . I literally devoured both Giovanni’s and Desi’s journey in a little under 5 hours nonstop . What a emotional story sometimes fiery , sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes moments that are so hot and many funny ones as well . The best way to describe it is like being on a rollercoaster. Nikita is such a crazy talented writer who know just how to grab onto all your emotions from start to ending and leave you wanting more . It’s truly so beautiful how she writes the characters in a way that enables us to feel everything they do . Trust me !! You will most definitely need a box of tissues while reading this phenomenal story . I am such a lover of mafia romances and this is one of the best I’ve read ❤️💜🖤

The Red Queen is the newest installment of the Mafia Queens series of stand alone books written by Nikita Slater. I have to say at the outset of this review that this set of books is one of my absolute favorites. I highly recommend all of the books in this series.

But let’s focus on the Red Queen for this review. This is the story of Desiree, a member of a Mexican cartel, and Giovanni, leader of a large Mafia family in Italy. This is a dark Mafia romance, an age gap story, and an enemies to lovers tale - three of my favorite genres. As is usual with this author, the writing is excellent, the characters are well rounded and very interesting, and the world building is vibrant and realistic. This story is exciting, heartbreaking at times and joyful in its conclusion.

I loved every page. Highly recommended.

This is the fourth book in this amazing series and is Gio and Desi’s journey. Giovanni is a dominant, powerful, and ruthless leader who is known as the Italian Godfather, and when he witnesses Desi taking revenge on a rival cartel for the death of her lover and boss, he takes her back to Italy with him. Gio knows that Desi is a female version of himself as she is just as ruthless, deadly, and obsessed. Desi is resilient, and she hides her vulnerability and anxiety, but Gio sees through her façade, and their relationship is tempestuous, with the chemistry between them combustible and undeniable. This is a well written story which is dark, raw, gritty, action packed, and with angst, drama, violence, redemption, loyalty, passion, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and riveting page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

I loved this book. The way we learn to forgive Desiree is so much more than I expected. Nikita Slater teaches us not to judge her by the impression Desiree gives us in her fights with Raina and Matteo. Giovanni shows us what it means to be the Boss of Italy, but also that every strong man regardless of age, needs a queen.
Desiree is one of the strongest women written by Nikita,a strong and a fighter even if life has given her blow after blow.
I learned to forgive and appreciate Desiree, she has my admiration.
The love and the beautiful and sweet relationship that the two form is more than perfect.
Nikita exceeded my expectations and I was surprised. Thank you and can't wait for the next book

I didn’t think I would like this book. I really REALLY did not like Desiree when she appeared in the previous books. I thought Giovanni would have deserved better.

Nikita wrote Desiree in such a light that it’s hard not to feel empathy for her. To see her side of things. How traumatized and abused she was from such a young age. I grew to love her as a character and will go as far to say she’s my favourite queen.

Giovanni, ah this man. You want to strangle him for part of the book and then fist bump him. He had a lot of growing to do too.

This pair keeps you on your toes. The ending is beautiful. I really liked the scenes in the future. 5 well deserved stars. This is easily one of my top 5 reads of 2020.

I read through this in one sitting last night. Giovanni and Desi's dynamic is fiery, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes hot af, and sometimes funny. I love how Nikita Slater's characters aren't perfect. They aren't caricatures of this or that type of hero or heroine, and they are fallible. Their depth means that when they feel, we feel, and, as usual, I found myself laughing, cursing, crying, and saying, "you did not just—" more than once.

If you love Nikita Slater's mafia romances, you might find yourself going back to reread the rest of the Queens. If you haven't, never fear. It works completely as a stand alone, but clear your calendar because you're going to be doing a big binge read afterward.

What a great story. I was not too fond of Desi in Born a Queen, but all I can say is WOW. After learning her story and all that she went through with Nico, I sympathized with her and realized how strong she had to survive her previous life. Giovanni Savino realized her potential the moment he found out about Desi, and he wanted her for himself. I loved how Desi stood up to Giovanni. I loathed Giovanni’s son Antonio, and it was entertaining to watch Desi beat him down. I did feel sorry for Giovanni. He wanted a family he could be proud of, and although Giovanni was a hard man, he could not find it in his heart to get rid of Antonio. Another great read Nikita! I absolutely love all your stories.

Loved Gio and Desi’s story! I wondered how I could ever like this villainous woman but I did. I loved her actually. My heart broke for every horrible thing Desi had to go through just to simply survive. She is a queen indeed. And Gio was a bit of an alphahole but he also saw something in Desi that no one else could and he took care of her and of course fell for her. I’m sure it would be a difficult task to help somebody with so much emotional baggage try to find their true self but Gio is a determined and powerful man and he doesn’t back down. I loved the vintner and her girlfriend/wife. I loved the bodyguards too and the mother. So many great characters and a beautiful inspirational story. Great epilogue too.

Wow! What a story. I was blown away by the characters, the storyline, and the epic ending. All the characters in this story were fantastic, which made it very interesting and exciting to read. I enjoyed most of all Desi’s backstory and who she became in the end. There was so much vulnerability with Desi, which made her character so authentic. Giovanni man was he the alpha of all alpha’s. I get why these two were made for each other. I cant express how well thought out and developed this story turned out. This is probably your best Nikita. Well done. It must have been gut wrenching writing this story. There were some parts I had a hard time reading, but pushed my way through it. I felt every emotion you could think of. Outstanding read and look forward to the next chapter.

Giovanni Savino is The Godfather of the Italian Mafia. Desi is the Mexican cartel queen.

Desi was abused and broken by the head of the cartel, Nico. She has been trained to take pain and to take care of those who wronged her. When Nico dies, her plan changes and she goes after those who killed Nico. What she doesn’t expect is to be captured, tortured, and given to Giovanni. It was either go with Giovanni or die.

Even though Giovanni is older, feelings start to fester and there is as much chemistry between them as there are fights.
Giovanni is up for the challenge in breaking Desi to bend her in any way he wants.

This is a dark mafia romance with a lot of darkness. It is truly a wonderful series. I recommend starting with book 1. You will not be disappointed!! Gets Five-Star read.

OMG! Only Nikita Slater can make me hate, love, mourn and sympathize within a book! The emotions in this book make you feel like you rode a rollercoaster without the safety harness. You are pulled in so many directions you forget if you hate Desi or love her. I felt everything Desi felt and damn the electricity between her and Gio is intense. The chemistry is indescribable. This story isn’t like the rest of the Queens series. It’s a broken enemy taken into the fold of allies and trying to survive. Desi doesn’t understand the feelings she is being slammed with but Gio will do everything to make her see things his way. This book is on fire! Can’t wait for the next Queens book!

The Red Queen is the newest addition to the Mafia Queens series. These are stand alone books but have a few recurring characters and intertwined story lines that do not prevent anyone from enjoying this read as a stand-alone.

This is a dark Mafia romance between Desiree, a member of a Mexican cartel, and Giovanni, the leader of large Italian Mafia family.

As with any Nikita Slater read, the story is well developed and the characters are well rounded. The worlds that Nikita builds are realistic and very exciting.

I loved this book and as always will look forward to her next release. One click!!! Automatic buy for a Slater novel always!

ALLL her books are the same. (I read 2 earlier ones, which had the same plot so i was like .. okay i will take this latest one.. for sure she has a new plot now....? NO! ) Like find a new plot?
Anti-hero sees h. he decides h will be his, no matter what h says. H pursue h very hard. h pushes back, runs away, she finds H is hot, but does not want to be with him. H is like f that and kidnaps h. h runs way, fights, is difficult some more. A lot of no condom sex, because H wants to breed h.
h runs away and gets in dangerous situation, H saves a day and treats h like equal from now on, not like a slave/possession.

Phenomenal story!

Giovanni and Desi’s whirlwind story had me gripping my kindle tightly, biting my nails with anticipation, and hoping that their emotional story ends up with a happy ever after. I laughed, I cried, I screamed and shouted the whole way through. It was one hell of an emotional rollercoaster ride that I never wanted to end.

Another brilliantly written story by this phenomenal author that knows just how to hook us readers with her stories, keep us emotionally invested in them and hate when they’re over.

Highly recommend.

I love reading Nikita Slater's books, the stories always keep you on your toes and although I know it's gonna finish with HEA still I am thrilling to find out what is gonna happen next. The other thing I really enjoy is that the heroines are not teenagers or young ladies in their 20s but grown up women in their mid 30s , maybe because I am as well. I can't wait for what is coming next from this author.

This is a solid action packed addition to the series. I count on this author for dominant, ruthless and possessive heroes who are completely enamored with their heroine who are always a true match in terms of strength and passion.

Desi is a particularly skilled heroine whose personality makes her particularly suited for Gio, and watching their chemistry clash and burn made this a one sitting read. I highly recommend this book!

I absolutely love all of the queen books. The women are strong and can hold their own. However, Desi was my absolute favorite queen. Her resilience was unsurpassed and her ability to accept love from Gio, Vitto and Donda was heartwarming. Gio was the epitome of a king who was able to open himself up to a woman with a big trauma history and love her despite of it. Well done Nikita
