February is known as the month of love. We do hope that you had the opportunity to show fellow members of the community some love during this past month.
Our Christian readers and neighbours have also welcomed their period of Lent. We wish them peace and love during this time.
Soon we will experience the Autumn season bringing with it some much-needed cooler air and beautiful colours. Have a look at some of the events to enjoy before the chillier days approach.
| |
| Lent is a six-week period of fasting or self-sacrifice, prayer and charity - observed by Christians each year to prepare for the celebration of Easter. It is a time for personal reflection that prepares people’s hearts and minds for Good Friday and Easter.

| 21 March 1960 - Sharpeville Massacre - That fateful day when 69 people lost their lives and hundreds wounded, when police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered in protest against the Pass laws.
Today, we commemorate it as Human Rights Day - as a reminder of our rights and the cost paid for our treasured human rights.
What are Human Rights? South Africa has included indivisible human rights in our own Bill of Rights, Chapter 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996. The Bill of Rights preserved in our Constitution is the cornerstone of our constitutional and representative democracy. The Constitution as our supreme law means that no laws may be passed that goes against it. The Bill of Rights also comprehensively addresses South Africa’s history of oppression, colonialism, slavery, racism and sexism and other forms of human violations. The Bill of Rights embeds the rights of all people in our country in an enduring affirmation of the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom.

| HUMAN RIGHTS DAY
Human Rights Day reminds us of two things – namely the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960, as well as the progress we have made as a nation in achieving human rights for all South Africans.
It is furthermore on this day that we commemorate the establishment of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
