Clip 1: Sound and Listening Exercises
Sixty of us attempt to pass a single broadsheet page of a newspaper as quietly as possible around half the circle. Then the remaining half attempt to make different sounds with the paper. We sit quietly, each of us letting the subtle sounds travel to our ears, searching for ways to describe what we hear.
Clip 2: Excerpt from student and teacher candidate sound play of Fahrenheit 451 (“He shouted to give…”)
We shifted from listening and describing to asking the students to look for and imagine sound within segments of Fahrenheit 451. Students chose, composed, and remixed sound to accompany group readings of the text.
