Cocoa Upends Satellite in Battle Of Unbeatens

It was a battle of two 6-0 teams on Thursday, as the Division 2 champion Satellite Scorpions visited Richard “Dick” Blake Stadium to take on the Division 1 champion Cocoa Tigers.

Brevard Sports Network’s Alan Zlotorzynski was joined by coach Derek Smith, as they called this game on Military Appreciation Night.

There were differing opinions on whether this should be called a Brevard County Championship game, but in the end, it was over early as Cocoa scored 41 points in the first half, en route to a  41-7 win.

Cocoa (7-0) got off to a fast start with a short rushing touchdown from O.J. Ross with 7:39 left in the first quarter. After Scorpions quarterback Gage Malkin threw only his second interception of the season, the Tigers took advantage of a short field and Tay Farmer ran it in from one-yard out to give Cocoa a 13-0 lead with just over a minute left in the quarter.

Cocoa quarterback D.J. Arroyo found Davis Mallinger for a big gain on Cocoa’s next drive, and that play led to another O.J. Ross touchdown run from one-yard out, his second of the night, giving the home team a 20-0 lead with 7:27 left in the first half.

Cocoa would get another quick touchdown when Daniel Robinson recovered a Satellite fumble in the end zone and just like that, it was 27-0.

After a Satellite punt, the Tigers used the big play, as Arroyo found Jmariyae Robinson for a 60-yard touchdown with 3:53 left in the half, making it 34-0.

After Tay Farmer ripped off a big run on the next Cocoa possession, getting the Tigers down to the 25-yard line, Arroyo found Donovan Giles with another touchdown pass and with 28 seconds left. That sent the Tigers to the locker room with a 41-0 lead.

With the running clock implemented, there was no scoring in the third quarter. The Scorpions got on the board early in the fourth when Malkin found Eddie Combs for a big play down to the 17, and Malkin found his favorite receiver Gunnar Greenwald with the Scorpions only score of the night.

Gavyn Garcia played the second half at quarterback for Cocoa, as the Tigers were able to play many of their backups in the second half. The Tigers will play host to the winner of the Hudson Vs. Space Coast winner. That game will be played on Nov. 20.
