Boykov Bratva #2

Essence of Fear: Boykov Bratva

Rate this book
The allure of fear is learning to love it. Viktoria Boykov has heard it all—cold they call her. The spoiled bratva princess. She knows very well what people say when her back is turned. She doesn’t mind; let them talk. It’s better for people to assume what they want about her than for them to know the truth … until him. Pavel Kotov knows what people say—death they call him. The Boykov dog. He’s heard all the whispers locked away in the cells of the Compound. As the reaper for the bratva, his life owned by someone else, he knows what they say doesn’t matter. His life has never mattered … until her. He’s terrifying. She’s terrified. Viktoria only wants to keep running from her past. Pavel doesn’t have a life to run from. Freedom is the one thing they both crave—for entirely different reasons. But this life is vicious, and scars like the ones they wear will never fade. Together, they could have everything. Or are they just pawns to a bigger game? * Essence of Fear is a Boykov Bratva standalone.

I think I liked this story better than Fractured Ties which was the first stand-alone in the series.

I do love a tortured hero, and I just wanted to protect and care for Pavel. (Not that he needed it, but you know, it’s the type of reaction he inspires)

I think Pavel and Viktoria were kind of made for each other but in a way that makes more sense than it did with the couple in the first book.

They went through horrible stuff and it stuck with them. It altered their life circumstances and their view of the world. But then they met and all of a sudden there was someone there to understand the brokenness in the other, and to allow them to be unapologetically themselves. I loved that element of their relationship.

It was a dark story with a silver lining. There was a lot of psychological trauma mentioned in this book to fill my quota for the month. So it definitely wasn’t easy to read about, but it felt cathartic. They got their peace and they got each other.

Essence of Fear is another stunning installment to the Boykov Bratva Series. After devouring the first book in the series Fractured Ties, and meeting Maya and Kolya, I simply could not wait to get my hands on more of this family and their action-packed lives. In Essence of Fear, we are introduced to Pavel Kotov a man who has been “enslaved” to the family under the demented Vadim (the father of Kolya, Konstantin, and Viktoria). Now that Vadim has been exiled back to Russia by his son, Pavel is given freedom unlike he has ever known. While exploring the newness of being a “free man” he crosses path with Viktoria the Mafia Princess of the family. Although Viktoria has always been known to be cold and heartless, especially towards men, there is an instant connection between Pavel and Viktoria. Viktoria has many demons in her past and somehow Pavel seems to calm her fears. As their friendship continues to grow into more, the baggage of both of their pasts starts to haunt them. Is Pavel strong enough to offer Viktoria the safety and peace that she deserves? Can Viktoria lead Pavel into a life of freedom and hope or will they both let the darkness swallow them alive?

"She was amazing. Vicious and strong and beautiful."
Told in multiple POV, Essence of Fear is full of action, suspense, and passion that will light your Kindle on fire. I have always been a fan of Bethany-Kris and yet somehow, this series has earned a special place on my shelf of goodness. The family dynamics in this series are unique and the complexities throughout the plots will keep you addicted to every turn of the page. The trauma that both Pavel and Viktoria experienced and overcame truly made them unforgettable and the way in which they fiercely protected each other was truly beautiful. In addition to my love for this beautiful couple, I adore the family dynamics between the siblings and their absolute loyalty to each other. As always, the passion between the main characters is off the chart and the non-stop action kept me on the edge of my seat the entire read!
"She was his heroin, and the needle was right in his fucking heart."
Overall, Essence of Fear will appeal to readers who enjoy action, suspense, and good old fashioned mafia romance. Bethany-Kris never fails to craft a thrilling story with a complete commitment to her characters and the world in which they live. When it comes to the Boykov world, it is one that I could stay in forever!

Whilst I loved Pavel and, at times Viktoria, they kind of got lost in the beginning because I was so confused with not having the opportunity to read Konstantin's as yet unpublished book. There is such a great big honking time jump from where Kolya's book ended and this one starts I kinda got whiplash! I mean, I didn't even recognise Konstantin from the first book to this one, a total change and growth in character that I wanted to witness myself instead of having to see it through this book. This is no fault of the author though, to my mind it's down to not being able to read the series in order. I know the stories are standalone, but for me are most definitely part of a series with an over-arching story line that needs to be read in order to get the full benefit of the characters.

Once I got over myself I enjoyed Pavel and Viktoria's journey to happiness. I'm no fan of prickly heroines but in this case I got Viktoria totally, and she eventually grew on me. Pavel was so perfect for her, two very broken characters that were meant to be. I loved their honesty with each other, how they pushed themselves for each other and believed in each other.

The Boykov Bratvata lives on and this is Viktoria Boykov’s story. This is a dark story with both the hero and the heroine having gone through emotionally difficult moments in their life that have broken them. And when Viktoria and Pavel meet, they are able to see the brokenness in each other to create a connection instantaneously.

This story delves deep in raw emotions. Fear and an Emptiness encompasses Vik’s soul and to function, she takes on a persona as an uncaring bitch. Pav on the other hand, with his quiet demeanor and his nickname of Zhatka—the Reaper, is the essence of fear. But he also has an emptiness in his soul. And trusting is not a feeling that these two experience. Their past is not easy to read but knowing it hurts and makes you feel for these characters. Their learning and trusting of one another is a beautiful journey of tearing down walls and embracing their fears and this deep abiding love they have found in each other.

The Bravata is filled with violence and more so when Vik’s life is under attack once again. With Pav at her side as well as her brothers, Vik learns to embrace her fear and take it on. Konstantin and Kolya are wonderful supporting characters and it’s great to get to see them as brothers and also the men in charge. The Boykov Family has become a new addiction!!

I absolutely die for Bethany Kris' stories. Essence of Fear was another winner in the Boykov Bratva series. After reading Fractured Ties with Kolya and Maya's love story I could not wait for more. Pav and Viktoria's story was filled with darkness and light; love and passion and the idea that despite hardship, traumatic and painful experiences, love is possible. I loved this story so much.

Pavel and Viktoria were just amazing together. Both broken but in different ways. Fragments of who they could be. But together, they found pieces of themselves in each other to make them whole. I absolutely loved this story and how Kris highlighted how together both Pav and Viktoria found the strength to love and be loved. What I loved more than anything was how feral Pav was when it came to Viktoria. Here you have a.sheltered and broken man who, once finding Viktoria, basically became a beast in his determination to protect her. She was all he saw and lived for and I for one was obsessed with him. I loved this story so much and can't wait for Zoya's book! 5 stars! ~Ratula

This little gem landed on my kindle a few days ago and everything pretty much stopped for me. If it wasn’t for Father’s Day I would have read this in one sitting LOL

Not gonna lie, the prologue had me all kinds of nervous, and not in the way you probably think. I was worried that the violence in this book would overshadow the romance journey and I have to be in the mood to read those. But I’m a (author) junky now so nerves were only in play for two seconds max lol THIS.STORY. I don’t understand this word wizardry this woman has. No matter the tale, she spins it so well you are left speechless. Well, I am. *shrug*

Essence of Fear wasn’t just a story of Viktoria Boykov and Pavel Kotov getting to a place in life where they could have a HEA. This was a glorious story of growth and trust, finding your place and choosing your fate. I know, I know, how does one choose their fate when the very definition of the word includes phrasing such as development of events beyond a person's control. Well, you say screw those developments and take control of what (or who) you want … to be, to spend the rest of your life with, to be friends with, etc etc etc … You get my gist. This is what both Viktoria and Pavel reminded me of or made me feel about them. That is what I liked best about this book and that is what captivated me and kept me glued to every word.

This book seemed different from all the other books I’ve read by this author. It was more the delivery of the story than anything else. I don’t know, it’s like this story isn’t finished but it is! And again, this could just be me not having read enough or Bethany’s world(s) to really understand them fully. However, that doesn’t matter that much to me because what takes precedence in my head is Viktoria and Pavel, and they were perfect.

She didn’t even think about it before she crossed the room, reached up to catch his face in her palms, and then she pulled him in for a kiss. He didn’t hesitate to answer her back—his lips worked hard against hers while he took her breath away all at the same time.
Yeah, he was still figuring things out.
About the world.
About life.
About himself.
But her?
Them?
She didn’t ever want him to wonder.
Never.
Viktoria pulled away from the kiss, but still stayed close enough that their lips grazed as she spoke. “You don’t have to ask anyone anything—I am always going to be yours. And you’re mine. I decided.”
Pav smirked. “That’s how it is, then?”
“That’s how it is.”
“I like that.”
She winked. “You better.”

Why am I not surprised that BK has penned another incredible story that will capture and captivate her readers. Viktoria and Pavel have both suffered and are more than a little broken, yet their broken pieces somehow fit to complete the other. Their story was fractured perfection!

I highly suggest you pick up this book! Essence of Fear by Bethany-Kris is an EPIC read that will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!

“The whole world is strange to me,” he murmured. “I don’t know anything about it.”
“It used to be a nice place,” she replied, “but not so much now.”
He was a mess, too.
Just in a different way than her.

i liked viktoria ;

'Already, the man had backed off. With his shopping basket in hand, he walked away shaking his
head the whole time. Yet another person that would recognize Viktoria’s face the next time they came face to face. The first thing they would remember about her was the fact that she was a bitch, and they would keep their distance.
In some ways, she liked that.
In others, it irritated her.
Bitch was meant to be a slur—she just fucking owned it now. She would rather be seen as a bitch by people than easy prey. If being a bitch meant people stayed far away from her at all times, then that was perfectly fine with her.'

so tbh the mood for this book was a lil gloomy. it felt dark, the vibes and all, which was why dramatic sentences like 'im not like everyone else' didnt feel ott bcs it felt that way when i read ab them. being in their head was.. not depressing but i can feel theyre depressed

“You know, you should get out of the Compound more often.”
Pav’s gaze darted back to hers. “Why?”
“You look good out in the light like everyone else.”
Pretending to be normal. Acting like you fit in. Just like me.
He did smile that time.
Wide and beautiful.
Sinful, even.
She wondered if he could read her mind.
Was that possible?
“Except I’m not like everyone else, Viktoria.”
She shrugged. “Yeah, me either.”

it was surprisingly not bad, just a bit too insta lovey & not enough romance for me (also idk whether its me who couldnt connect w/ pav & vik or it was intentional to make their characters felt dead lmao)

Violence and threat.

Essence of Fear by Bethany-Kris is book Two in the Boykov Bratva Series. This is the story of Pavel Kotov and Viktoria Boykov. I have read the previous book, which did add to my enjoyment of this one. I do think you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Although it has been a really good series you might just want to read the previous book. Pavel has been a tool for and enslaved by Vadim, but now he has been released after Vadim was take care of. So Pavel is working to settle into the freedoms that he has been given. Viktoria is a Mafia Princess with a reputation of being a cold spoiled princess. But she has reason for they way she acts that cover a past of hurt. When Viktoria and Pavel meet they both feel the connection and attraction that draws them to each other. Both are really broken soles that seem to find peace together. I really enjoyed the first book and I was so happy that this book lived up to the last one. Can't wait for more from this author.

Quietly powerful…

Where do I start talking about the incredible characters Viktoria and Pavel? Two damaged souls hiding from others, from life, from themselves. Vik portrayed herself as an icy queen while Pav didn’t want others to seem him at all. The past that held so much pain held both of them back. From facing devastating truths to contemplating a happy future, they had to deal with that before anything else…

When the time came for both to come to terms with themselves, I was already clinging to them as each revelation brought even more violence… The hidden depths to these characters was astounding as the author peeled complex layer upon layer, exposing their inner thoughts, fears and hopes… The tight-wire of tension and emotion. The complicated balance of hate and love. Of sweetness and utter depravity. A romance like this shouldn’t work but it did so very well…

Hands down this was one of my favourite reads from this author – and that’s saying a lot because many were put immediately on the re-read shelf. Am I still squirmy during the dark, oh so real feeling moments? Abso-freaking-lutely. I don’t think that will ever change but it doesn’t keep me from going back again and again.

If you’ve never read this author, feel free to start with this stand-alone. And be prepared to go searching for lots more…

« Abused dogs never forget where they come from. They can pretend, and act like they’re broken and incapable, but once they’re free… You turn your back once, give them that chance, and I promise, they will take it every time »

Probably the author’s darkest book. The story of the Reaper and the Ice Queen. Inevitably impossible to put down.

Fear can be your greatest enemy or ally

Bethany-Kris surprised me with this one. I thought we'd get a look into Konstantin's life. It was a good surprise seeing behind the ghosts in Viktoria's eyes. It was an even better glee watching her get her revenge.

Essence of Fear is a twisted reminder of an evil only few are forced into contact with. The evil responsible for so much suffering...and the blinders they had in place to the truth.

My blinders fell away before Vik's and still it didn't soften the blow. Pav is something else. I would say a breath of fresh air but he is more like an innocence that allows one to breathe. Don't let my wandering thoughts fool you, Pav is not innocent. Death has never been innocent and Pav is the closest thing to death in Boykov Bratva.

I received and ARC for my honest review.

This is the second book in the boykov bravata world. And can be read as a stand-alone but if it was me I would start with Fractured Ties.
Bethany-Kris is one of the few authors on my list of read everything they release without looking at the blurb or knowing what I’m getting into. This book proved as to why I’m never disappointed as Bethany has a way of writing that pulls you in and keeps your attention. Now I have a thing for dark and twisted books so to me this story was just the right amount of bloodshed mixed with heart beats. Pav and Viktoria are both haunted and broken in ways that make you want to see them get what they deserve in the end.
It’s another well written story that keeps you reading until the very last word.

Definitely a book to one click. Or add to your TBR pile. You won’t be disappointed! Especially if you enjoy Russian mob stories!

Slow start but there was enough happening to keep me reading on 🙂

I liked Pav and Viktoria but I struggled with Vadim and the darkness he exuded.

The overall story didn’t grab me like a BK book would normally do so. Not sure if my lack of book buzz was due to me or the story...

I really liked, but that should’ve a surprise because I love everything from this author.

I was really looking forward for this book, or should I say Pavel’s story, and Viktoria been he’s other half was just marvelous.

He is The Reaper, she is the princess of the mafia.

I was in love with this two since I started reading and with every page I turned my interest just keep growing.

Pavel and Viktoria were two broken souls, the madness of some people brake them on ways that is almost impossible to recover and they kinda function as others want or order. But when they meet perhaps is that darkness and nightmares who eventually brings them together.
For a moment I was feeling like the attraction they feel was developed too fast, Viktoria trusting someone and be alone with him keeps bothering me because I was telling myself that with everything she went through her barriers can’t be that easy to brake, but I guess a broken person can identify someone with the same issues, so after that I can’t be more happy with the way the author create and build the relationship of this heartbroken characters. Pav give Viktoria the space and time when no one else did, including her brothers, and she give Pav the same.
One thing I really liked is that the author doesn’t make a big drama with the background story of Pavel, he could easily blame all the family of Vik for what happened to him, but that never happens, sure he hate and take a little revenge but is only with the person who’s directly responsible for he’s suffering and pain.
I just wished the book wasn’t too short, there’s to much I liked to know but I had hope that maybe the author would give us a full book with Konstantin story, got big hopes on that!!!

Thank you so much to the Author and @Indiesageor for the advanced copy on exchange for my honest review.

I devoureddd this book. I mean like reading at 4am devoured. It was sooo good.
Pav and Vik were amazing together, but also both had these tragic backstories that made you love them as individual characters. One was trying to get over fear while the other was the very essence of it (which, the title for this book is perfect). No one else could understand them but the other. No one else could catch their interest but the other. Their romance was amazing, both of them overcoming who life had turned them into to be with each other. Trusting one another, and learning that emotions they thought they'd never feel again still existed.
And on the other side of that was the violence. Oh, how I loved that aspect too. Hearing about Pav's life in the Compound and everything that went on there. What was going on within the Boykovs since some serious changes were made. And the bad guy, or really guys, God, I just wanted to gut them.
This book had my heart beating hard from the very beginning and that continued throughout the story. Another amazing read from Bethany-Kris

I felt this book was good. The faults with it seemed out of order. It was done purposely from the the author,I hope, but it throws me off. It does gives a preview of what's it come.

Pav and Viktoria relationship makes sense. Both broken from her father's interference.

Ever been sucked in deeply by a book? Ever had the plot of a book take your breath away? Ever devoured a book so much, spent every moment reading the book and indulging on every single moment of the book? Bethany-Kris steals my heart with effortless stories with strong women and dangerous alpha heroes. Every inch of her stories makes me high every single time I read them. Books like Essence of Fear that bring in an unforgettable romance layered in an addictive and mind blowing story. Heart Throbbing story. Enigmatic characters. Essence of Fear will tug at your heart and mesmerize your soul with a brilliant and edgy russian mafia story.

Essence of Fear is the titillating Boykov Bravta standalone, written by one of my favourite authors Bethany-Kris, telling a beautiful and heart snatching story in the world of danger, suspense and mafia. A russian mafia romance with an emotional and dark plot that will move your heart and tangle you into a scorching web. I devoured Essence of Fear. Every chapter attacked my heart and made me fall in love with every word. Every moment in Essence of Fear was perfect. Riveting. Heart Stopping. Alluring. Essence of Fear is a glorious story with a touching subject that speaks into your soul. A story of growth, strength, trust and love. A story of mending the broken pieces in your heart. A story of loving and understanding the true essence of fear. Absolutely delivered.

When I enter into Bethany-Kris’s world, you are greeted with strong heroines and deadly alpha heroes. In Essence of Fear, I was greeted by two broken souls with such tragic and broken pasts who learn and grow in each other with love, trust and understanding. I loved Pavel and Viktoria. Their pasts touched my heart so deeply. Pavel is scary and dangerous but he understands Viktoria on another level. Viktoria plagued with nightmares and depression is a strong woman who fears the world around her. It was amazing to read and see two broken and fractured souls find love in each other in a dark and deadly world.

Essence of Fear is truly an incredible read with a different story that will sweep you away. A must read.

When I first started reading this I was a little confused as it doesn’t start where Fractured Ties ends. We have skipped quite a bit of time and the Boykov Bratva has moved on a LOT so I thought I must have missed out a book, so I went to seek it out however I remembered this series is shared between two authors and London Miller is doing books 2 and 4, which are not out yet! So I decided to continue reading anyway and I must say I am glad I did.

I really enjoyed this one, Pavel and Viktoria both have their own issues and have been through some very dark and painful times. They each have a cold calm persona and in Viktoria's case also bitchy, which they use as protection to shield their real self from the outside world. I loved how they gained strength from each other and showed each other how to love and grow to love themselves. These two were absolutely perfect for each other ❤

I am looking forward to reading more from the Boykov Family hopefully we don’t have to wait too long.

Both Pav and Viktoria have had fucked up things happen to them. At 12 years old, Pav saw his father be taken away and then Pav was forced to become the Reaper: an overseer of enemies and betrayers of the Russian mob whose fates lie in the Compound. Viktoria was raped by her betrothed and throughout this book we see how she's been coping since then. Viktoria's father Vadim, had a hand in hurting both of Viktoria and Pav and despite being exiled by Konstantin, we see just how far Vadim is willing to go in an effort to cling to power. I'm glad he gets his just desserts in the end.

On their own, Pav and Viktoria seemed to be swallowed in darkness. Together, both of them come out of their shell and step into the light. It was nice to see Viktoria come to the realization of how diabolical and psychotic her father truly was. It was also nice to see her interact with Kolya and Konstantin. The way they check on her is really sweet.

Hopefully Konstantin's story is next.

Viktoria and Pavel are both broken by their pasts, and from the moment they meet there is an instant connection between them when they both realize that the other is in as much pain as the other. Pavel will do whatever he has to in order to protect her, and their journey together is tough as they slowly break down each other’s walls and move on to heal. This is a well written dark story which is addictive and filled with danger, suspense, emotion, violence, and love as well as being a raw, gritty, and heart-wrenching tale. I was completed enthralled throughout this riveting story and I cannot wait to read more from this talented author, whose work I highly recommend for all.

Viktoria is a Boykov princess that is ice cold. She allows no one in to see the real person she is and how she is terrified of her circumstances. Pavel is known as the enforcer for the Boykov Bratva and has no life to come home to at the end of the day. These two are instant chemistry and sparks fly between them. Can Pavel keep Viktoria safe from enemies? Will the people within the family stand in the couple's way? An intense read.

Great read

Loved it but it felt like I was missing some information. It was almost like I skipped a book, but I know I did not. I loved the characters growth together and they way they learned to navigate the world on their terms. I also enjoyed the revenge they got. I guess my dark side was glad the PC way wasn’t followed! As always up for more!
