A Message from the President

Apr 20, 2021

Dear North Central College Community,

I’m writing to acknowledge the tremendous pain that so many members of our community are feeling as we continue to witness police-involved shootings that result in the deaths of people of color. Most recently, the deaths of Adam Toledo and Daunte Wright have led to anger, sadness and grief among all people committed to building a better and more just world, and especially among those in Black, Latinx and other communities of color.

The ongoing trial of the police officer involved in the killing of George Floyd has also evoked deep pain and emotions. No verdict can erase the injustice of Mr. Floyd’s death.

As we work through these difficult times, I encourage all faculty, staff and students to support each other with kindness and compassion, and to ensure that everyone—especially those who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC)—feel safe and valued.

The burden of creating meaningful and lasting change, on our campus and throughout the country, cannot and should not be left to our BIPOC friends, colleagues and community members. To those of us whose identity grants us power and privilege: We must engage in meaningful anti-racist work, both inside and outside the classroom. Education can serve as a powerful force for positive change, but we must act to fulfill our commitment to become a more equitable and inclusive institution.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs has organized a Fireside Chat for tomorrow, April 21, starting at 4 p.m., to support the North Central community and to continue promoting racial justice. More details will be forthcoming from the Office of Multicultural Affairs on how to attend.

Sincerely,

Troy D. Hammond
President
