BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - Local high school students are joining the fight against anti-Asian violence and racial profiling.

They’re doing this by handing out yellow whistles to elderly Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) residents and members of their community.

It is a part of a national campaign called the Yellow Whistle Project.

The yellow whistle is a symbol of self-protection and solidarity in the fight against historical discrimination and Anti-Asian violence.

The whistle is a simple tool with a universal purpose—to call for help.

16-year-old Sammi Wang says it doesn’t matter your age; you can help in your own community.

“This is kind of showing we stand with them, want them to stay safe in our community and we want them to feel like they are being looked out for,” said Wang.

100,000 whistles will be handed out across the nation until Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
