KC Scholars annouces the election of Michael Roane and Beto Lopez to its board of directors. They start three-year terms beginning on July 1, 2020. |
Michael Roane served as co-chair of the Steering Committee and the Implementation Committee during planning and implementation of KC Scholars. Roane is the previous Senior Vice President & Chief Human Resources Officer for JE Dunn Construction, is active on multiple community boards and co-chaired the KC Rising Human Capital Workgroup. |
A first-generation college graduate who grew up on the Westside of Kansas City, Beto Lopez is the Chief Operating Officer with the Guadalupe Centers, with a previous career in finance and real estate. He currently serves as the Mayor Pro-Tempore of Lee’s Summit and has served on several volunteer boards and commissions including Guadalupe Educations Systems, Kansas City’s Brownfield’s Commission, Donnelly College, Overland Bancorp and Jackson County Sports Complex Authority. |
Roane and Lopez join five other directors including Jan Kreamer (Board Chair), David Warm (Secretary), Tammy Edwards (Treasurer), Terry Bassham and Michelle Kay. |

Eric Thompson will join the KC Scholars’ team on August 17, 2020, as the Adult Learner Innovation Manager and an Adult Learner Coach. Eric is currently the Dean of Student Success and Engagement at MCC-Penn Valley where he previously served as the Student Support Services Coordinator and Admissions Manager. Before moving to MCC, Eric was the Admissions Coordinator at MCC-BTC and also previously worked at KU and Friends University. |
The KC Star recognized 2020 high school graduates from the Metro region in a June 21 publication. The recognition was co-sponsored by KC Scholars. All Scholars were recognized and were searchable from the list of over 22,000 graduates. |

The 2017 cohort of 9th grade awardees in the College Savings Match and Incentive Program enroll in college in Fall 2020. This marks the milestone of Scholars in all three program components being in college (9th and 11th grade and Adult Learner).
Of the first cohort of 9th grade awardees, 91.4% are going to college and they earned an average of $4,402.63 in match and incentives during high school. Scholars can earn up to $7,000: $5,000 through a 4:1 match on their contributions into their College Savings Accounts and $2,000 by completing key college-ready milestones each year of high school. Of Scholars enrolling in college, 21 (33%) earned the full $7,000. |
