Having nostalgia for the past is frequently seen as a negative. The recent blockbuster Lessons In Chemistry, as well as movies like Pleasantville among others, are quick to prove the ‘good old days’ weren’t actually that great. But this, as Madeleine states, is unfair. Nostalgia is a powerful response to a flawed world, and if used right, can help us build a worthy tomorrow. In this video, she gives a brief overview on her thesis concerning nostalgia and critiques ongoing trends about ‘decolonising the classroom’ and ‘vintage fashion, not vintage values.’ Here, a point is made that being nostalgic, and looking to the past for inspiration, is part of what makes us human. There are references to Roger Scruton, numerous aesthetic accounts on X (formally Twitter), the British Empire, the Greek War For Independence, and Soviet Russia. This video may appeal to students of history, or anyone passionate about how the past is talked and scrutinised in contemporary culture.

Comments and feedback are most welcome.

Why do ancient historians study modernity? In this video, Madeleine explains the reasons why: heritage, historiography, political concerns, and more. There are references to neoclassical architecture and sculpture, as well as the Secret History by Donna Tartt and I, Claudius by Robert Graves. Ongoing trends in tourism are of keen interest - particularly Pompeii in Central Italy and Ephesus in Northwestern Turkey. Near the end, there is a sombre reminder of the destruction the Middle East and North Africa have suffered from vile fanatics, as shown in Palmyra (Syria).

This video will certainly appeal to those studying ancient history, as well as modern historians and literary scholars focusing on the reception of antiquity. It may also be relevant to heritage and tourism anthropologists as well as political scientists. Madeleine is currently studying two ancient history subjects as a non-award candidate at Macquarie University, taken at a postgraduate level. You can see the unit guides here.

The topic of symbolism in literature is prone to controversy, as readers debate the extent to which symbolism is intended by the author, and the injection of psychology, history, and politics into the story. But symbolism is more than that: it's a way for readers to connect the story-world to their own reality. Likewise, authors have the opportunity to expore their own writing process and philosophies within the narrative.

Welcome to this short, educational video explaining what symbolism is in literature. Here, Madeleine draws on three main examples: Tolkien's Middle Earth, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and Atonement by Ian McEwan. There are no spoilers. Also, Madeleine gives her own opinion into the difference between allegory and symbolism, as well as the role of psychology in literary analysis.

There's an interesting field in the humanities: global history, where the historian attempts to transcend national and ethnic boundaries to illuminate aspects of the past. It's different to comparative, big, macro, and imperial history, but is just as exciting. In this video, Madeleine discusses the numerous factors shaping global history into a dynamic field.

Madeleine apologises for any mispronunciations and the hot audio, which is sadly prominent in this video. She recommends, however, you consider watching her videos on memory studies, the importance of culture while studying war, and the many reasons why we love the Roman Empire. Subscribing is also a splendid idea.

Western civilisation has a keen interest in Ancient Rome. From neoclassical architecture to political projects in Eastern Europe, it is impossible to divorce the West from Ancient Rome. But why the love? Why the focus, the energy, the scholarship, etc? Why did Shakespeare write multiple Roman-centric plays? Why are so many readers bewitched by blockbusters like I, Claudius and The Secret History?

This video attempts to understand the love we have for Ancient Rome. Here, Madeleine takes a non-judgemental stance and explores the Western focus, and interpretation, of Ancient Rome. At the end, she gives (hopefully helpful) tips in taking your study and reading of Ancient Rome to exciting new levels. This video essay is free of name calling and crude judgements towards those who love Ancient Rome. I hope you enjoy it - and feedback is most welcome.

A historian typically must learn foreign / ancient languages in order to conduct their work. This is for four main reasons: primary sources, historiography, working with others, and presenting their work to an audience. In this video, Madeleine discusses the reasons why historians learn languages, and draws on multiple examples, from Herodotus in Ancient Greece to archeologists from the 19th century. It's a short video - quick to watch, and easy to learn. There's tips at the end for language learning.

Comparative religion is a dynamic field, which challenges our perceptions of religion, what it is, who is religious, and if religion matters in our so-called 'secular' age. Bringing together perspectives from theology, mythology, global studies, and secular politics, I will give a brief outline to what comparative religion is, and why you should incorporate aspects of it in your study.

Overall, I appreciate comparative religion, yet scholars may face some risks in their research. As always, feedback is highly appreciated and welcome. I look forward to making more educational content about the humanities, as well as putting history, literature, and culture into practice. My channel, Snowy Fictions, aims to do both. Memory studies is an interdisciplinary field covering both humanities & sciences. But why does it matter? Can memory studies better help us understand history and each other? Welcome to this short video about memory studies, where you'll discover an exciting field about memory. There's also a focus on the different disciplines covered by memory studies. However, this is an introduction video and may be too basic for those already familiar with memory studies.

My goal is to create informative videos about the humanities, so feedback is certainly appreciated.

War studies is frequently associated with logistics, tactics, operations, military strength, and the likelihood of success. But there's another side to this dynamic field - culture, which as I argue, reveals crucial aspects about the war experience. In this video, I demonstrate the many ways culture can help us better understand war: the causes, the events, and the consequences afterwards. I draw on a variety of movies and tourist monuments for my arguments, but there are also references to historical events and archives (such as The State Library of NSW in Sydney, Australia).

I'm passionate about sharing the humanities with a wider audience - so why not subscribe? I make frequent videos about history, literature, and culture. My blog, Snowy Fictions, has nearly 200 articles on these topics.

Intellectual history is dedicated to the study of ideas over time. But what sources are used? How does it differ from philosophy? Does reception studies and medievalism matter for intellectual historians? This (brief) video attempts to answer these questions and provide talking points for an exciting field in history. Drawing on thinkers from Ancient Greece to a Europe pondering over Marxism, I aim to illuminate the many aspects of intellectual history.

Populism is well, a popular topic in political science. The rise of AfD in Germany and Nigel Farage in the United Kingdom have created unique discussions about identity, country and purpose. Yet I've noticed a deep link between 21st century populist movements and Germanic mythology, literature and folklore. This video aims to explain this connection.

Please note: I do not express political opinions here - my aim is to describe, not evaluate with judgement.

A look into cosmic horror and the existential world of H.P Lovecraft. Although I'm not necessarily a fan of "weird fiction" or horror in general, I do appreciate the genre as a challenge to core theological and philosophical beliefs.

The theology of Vladimir Putin, the current President of Russia, is hotly contested. In this video, Madeleine attempts to shed light on the Russian Orthodox Church and its differences with the West. Please note this video does not discuss the current conflict in Ukraine and nor does it attempt to analyse specific policies and military decisions.

Snowy Fictions explores the historical, philosophy, cultural and literary issues presented in books and film. Videos are published weekly. There is an emphasis on science fiction and fantasy. Particular works of fiction are explored in great depth, and that includes A Song Of Ice And Fire novels, the work of Tolkien and C.S Lewis, and the fiction of George Orwell, Victor Hugo, Leo Tolstoy, Ray Bradbury, and William Shakespeare.

Time periods that I love include Medieval (especially Old English, Arthurian Romance), Early Modern and Romanticism. Also has a sharp eye for the gothic and all things dark and strange.
