Message from Pam

A massive thank you to all our Members who have supported our Meal Delivery Service so far and especially our Mother’s Day Menu.

We have a lovely menu this week again, so be sure to place your orders and enjoy some time off from cooking.

We eagerly await permission to re-open the course for golf, as soon as we have further details we will notify you. Thank you to Garry Ecob, our Men’s Golf Captain for these lovely course pictures taken on his course inspection walk this past week.

Best wishes and stay safe,
Pam

Annual General Meeting and annual financial statements

As previously communicated, the club’s annual general meeting has been adjourned and a new date will be set when circumstances permit. Hard copies of the audited annual financial statements have not yet been printed but will, as usual, be distributed at the meeting. In the meantime, interested members are welcome to request an electronic copy of the statements from the Finance Manager at admin@kloofcc.co.za.

Message from our Chairman

Members, please find a letter from Anton de Beer regarding the Club:

As everyone is aware, the Covid-19 lockdown has placed enormous strain on every sector of society. From the club’s perspective, it has come at a time when we were already facing declining rounds and patronage, in common with golf clubs generally, owing to factors beyond the control of any of us.

The reality is that some clubs may not survive the current crisis, with those without an income annuity, such as estate courses, or without a significant financial endowment, being more vulnerable.

In response to this, Manco is looking at all options to secure the club’s long-term future. This includes working closely with the trustees of the Field’s Park Trust, who owns the land on which the clubhouse and course are situated and who controls how it can be utilised. I am pleased to say we have the full support of the trustees as well as from the custodians of the club contingency fund.

As part of this exercise, we are exploring different business models for both the course and the clubhouse and testing these against cost savings with the objective of maximising cost efficiency with minimal service impact to members and guests. On the course maintenance side, this naturally entails close engagement with Matkovich Course Management, our course maintenance service provider.

With nearly all staff off work during the closedown, we have endeavoured to maintain salary levels as far as possible, taking into account the UIF TERS benefit. Furthermore, senior management has volunteered to take salary cuts and we express our sincere appreciation to them.

At this stage we do not know when, and under what conditions, the club will be allowed to re-open but it does seem likely that the re-opening will be phased in, starting with golf only which we hope will happen during May. Required protocols will be in place including controlled access and measures to facilitate social distancing. Other changes from the norm may be experienced by members, such as a 2-ball limit, and one tee tee-offs.

We hope to open the practice range with rules to ensure social distancing.

Some members are enjoying use of the club grounds for exercise and walking during the lockdown. There have been instances of this occurring outside regulated hours and of people hitting balls on the course. We ask you to respect the lockdown regulations and report any transgressions to Pam. The club cannot be seen to be tolerating such abuses.

Some of you may have seen this recent message from Dale Hayes:
“Even while golf clubs are closed, the monthly costs are enormous and with very little income, the monthly losses are mounting up. Once again I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all the loyal members across the country who are keeping clubs alive so there will be somewhere to play when we get past Covid-19.”

While the club faces strain, Manco is acutely aware that this applies equally to our members. In this regard I would like to express my appreciation for the numerous indications of support the club has received from members in the past few weeks. I would like to mention the offer from one of our long-serving members to pay for each round of golf played notwithstanding that he has already paid for upfront green fees.

In view of the loss of use of the course during the lockdown, Manco has decided that compensating credits will be available, aligned to the duration of the lockdown, on renewal of memberships for the next financial year.

We recognise that members are being affected to different degrees by the lockdown. For this reason, and to minimise the cost to the club, these credits will not be automatic but will be available on request so that members who can afford to do so are able to support the club further.

The benefits are set out in the accompanying table. Click here.

If any member paying monthly feels that they are unable to afford the monthly debit order, they are requested to contact Pam Glass on the following email: debtors @kloofcc.co.za.

On behalf of Manco, I trust that we can count on the continuing loyalty of all our members during this challenging time.

Yours sincerely,
Anton de Beer SC
Chairman

Keep moving

Strengthen your foundation

Being home doesn’t mean you can’t work on your golf game. Your physical conditioning is just as important as technique and course management. Improving your mobility from home means that when you’re back on the course, you can hit the ground running.

A good golf swing starts at your ankles. Being able to stay in position while transferring weight from your back foot to your front foot during the downswing requires ankle mobility. Lacking ankle mobility leads to early extension and inconsistent ball striking.

This exercise will help you improve your ankle mobility. And all you’ll need to do it is a few square feet of space.

Better mobility for a better swing

It’s possible to improve your golf game from home. Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and certain exercises are particularly good for your swing.

Upper leg mobility is something all good golf swings have in common. It helps you produce force more efficiently and with better balance. It also improves your lower back stability, reducing the risk of pain and injury.

The walking quad to glute stretch will help improve mobility in your upper legs. And all you need is a few metres of walking space.
