Louisiana governor one of 26 governors across nation condemning anti-Asian hate
Asian Americans shaken by the shootings in Atlanta and a rising tide of hate sparked by the coronavirus pandemic. The whole, like Asian fever. It made me feel gross. Um, like I couldn't be comfortable in my skin. There's no desire to see me as a person. There's no desire to get to know me. It's purely like I've made up my mind about who you are and I hate you for it. President Biden wants Congress to pass a covid 19 Hate Crimes Act, which he says will speed up the federal government's response to the rise in violence and discrimination against Asian Americans. Hate and violence often hide in plain sight. It's often met with silence that's been through throughout our history, but that has to change the president speaking in Georgia, where shootings targeting spots in the Atlanta area left eight people dead this week, including six women of Asian descent and calls are growing for hate crimes charges to be filed against the suspect. Certainly during the pandemic, there has been a lot of market increased in violence against Asian Americans against the most vulnerable of our population. Gov. John Bel Edwards joined 25 other governors across the United States in a joint statement condemning anti-Asian hate. This comes after several women of Asian descent were killed in Atlanta. According to the organization Asian Americans Advancing Justice, the governors released a statement that reads in part: "What is happening to Asian Americans is simply un-American. We condemn racism, violence, and hatred against our AAPI communities, and we must do more to protect, lift up, and support the Asian American community."Read the full news release here.
