Greeks aged 25 to 29 will soon be eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, as the country plans to open up vaccination appointments to the age group on Thursday.

Marios Themistokleous, Greek Secretary General for Primary Health Care, announced this next step in Greece’s vaccination campaign, called “Eleftheria,” or “Freedom,” during a press conference on Monday.

Young Greeks who are 25 to 29 years of age will have the option to receive the Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson and Johnson shots, but not the vaccine from AstraZeneca, Themistokleous stated.

Greeks of this age group were already eligible for the vaccine, but only the shot from the maker Johnson and Johnson.

While no dates have been announced yet, those aged 18-24 will be next in line for the vaccine in Greece.

He noted that there has been great demand to receive the shot in Greece, and that vaccine appointments for Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson and Johnson shots in Attica are nearly 100% booked.

Greece records 808 cases of Covid-19, 24 deaths Monday

Greece recorded 808 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday, which marks 300 more instances of the virus than the 580 cases recorded on Sunday — but still far under the daily totals reported in the last few months, which routinely came to over 1,000.

Just three of Monday’s total cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.

Additionally, there are 392 patients with Covid-19 on ventilators on Monday, which is six fewer than the 398 patients undergoing the invasive treatment in the country yesterday, Sunday.

Tragically, 24 people suffering from the coronavirus passed away in the country over the past 24-hour period, which represents the same number as those who died with the virus on Sunday.

Greek Hospital Reveals Shocking 100% ICU Death Rate

One Greek hospital’s ICU mortality rate is almost 100 percent, according to a report released by the hospital workers union POEDIN on Thursday.

Agrinio Hospital, in western Greece, has an ICU with a five bed capacity which has been treating severe COVID-19 cases since October 2020. POEDIN figures attest to 35 out of 40 total ICU patients having passed away while receiving treatment at the hospital.

However, the Greek hospital’s ICU scandal deepened over the course of last week. Media reported on Friday that from a total of 41 patients which had been hospitalized in the Covid-ICU of the hospital, 40 had passed away, with the most recent tragic death having occurred that very morning.

This new information brings Agrinio Hospital’s mortality rate close to 100 percent in their coronavirus ICU treatment wing. The scandal led to the forced resignation of the hospital’s president on Saturday.

396 cases of Covid-19 diagnosed in Attica alone; 75 in Thessaloniki

Of the 808 new coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 396 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.

Instances of the virus have begun to fall in the center of the Greek capital, where 99 cases of Covid-19 were identified Monday.

Tests showed that in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, a total of 75 cases of Covid-19 had been diagnosed in the last 24 hours.

Over 400,000 total coronavirus cases in Greece

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 410,166 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the cases diagnosed in Greece in the past seven days, just 38 are associated with foreign travel and 1,681 have been linked to contact with a known case.

Of the 392 patients intubated currently, 86.5% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 67.

On Monday alone, 129 people with the coronavirus were admitted to hospitals in Greece.

Additionally, a total of 2,510 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 24 new deaths recorded on Monday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 12,301; 95.2% of those who have passed away with the virus were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
