The Alliance was established during the 23rd United Nations Conference of Parties (COP23) by the Governments of South Africa, Nigeria and Rwanda. Its mission is to spur Africa’s transition to a Circular Economy at the country, regional and continental levels by operating as a collaborative platform to coordinate and link the various initiatives on the continent. The ACEA’s main intervention pillars include policy advisory, leadership & advocacy, as well as projects and business scale-up. As the transition to a fully circular economy could generate $4.5 trillion in economic benefits globally by 2030, the Alliance aims to harness immediate opportunities in Africa for increased circularity in sectors that will support the economy, jobs, and the environment on the continent in the long-term.

Current membership includes Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa and is expanding as other countries have expressed interest to join the Alliance.

The Alliance’s Technical Committee is also comprised of strategic partners who support its objectives provide funding for project implementation on the continent. Partners include the African Development Bank, Global Environment Facility, World Economic Forum, African Circular Economy Network (ACEN), UN Environment, KAS Foundation, Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy (PACE), and the Government of Finland and its affiliate innovation Sitra.
