The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (MoCC) recently launched the Humanity–Climate–Nature: A Future Museum Curators’ Exhibition. Officiating at the launch ceremony were the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC)’s Chairman Mr Simon Wong kit-lung and CUHK’s Vice-President (Administration) Mr Eric S.P. Ng. The exhibition runs until 31 January 2023.

The exhibition features the results of an 18-month community-engagement project, ECF Mobilizing Community Climate Action by Future Museum Curators. The project is supported by the Hong Kong government’s Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF). It recruited 70 secondary school students and, through a unique model of experiential and problem-based learning, equipped them with the knowledge and skills to become “Future Museum Curators”, and inspire action on climate change and sustainable development through exhibitions.

Earlier this year, the well-trained Future Museum Curators presented the results in 10 virtual exhibitions dealing with various sustainability challenges, such as climate change, carbon reduction and waste management (http://www.mocc.cuhk.edu.hk/ecffmc-school-virtual-gallery). After public voting and a final assessment by a panel of expert judges, three winning Best Future Museum Curators teams were selected to work with the MoCC on a new physical exhibition on a theme of their choice, to be presented at the MoCC: Toi Shan Association College, Pui Ching Middle School and HKSYC&IA Wong Tai Shan Memorial College. The student-led Humanity–Climate–Nature: A Future Museum Curators’ Exhibition explores how human activity gives rise to sustainability challenges and calls for immediate climate action from the community to tackle these threats.

In his welcome address, Mr Ng expressed his gratitude to the ECC for supporting CUHK and the MoCC’s community climate education work. He said that the project was an excellent demonstration of CUHK’s commitment to university social responsibility and to nurturing future sustainability leaders. He added that he hoped exhibition visitors would be inspired by the students’ creativity and become more aware of climate challenges, and he encouraged them to take part in climate action by spreading the Future Museum Curators’ green messages in the community.

Mr Wong noted that the successful launch of the exhibition realised the Future Museum Curators’ efforts. “The outstanding results of this ECF project are an excellent demonstration of the ECC’s objectives of raising public awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and encouraging society to work towards achieving carbon neutrality goals,” he said. He also thanked CUHK for making good use of the ECF’s funding to empower the younger generation to become climate advocates, making climate action sustainable.
