Shopping centre giant sees an Amazon future

America’s largest owner of shopping centres is working with Amazon on transforming spaces formerly filled by department stores into warehouses for online orders.

Executives at Simon Property Group are understood to have held discussions with the internet shopping group about sites previously used by Sears and JC Penney.

The two chains are closing stores across the United States after filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Between them, they have more than 70 sites in malls owned by Simon Property.

Amazon has been exploring the possibility of turning some anchor department stores at Simon Property sites into distribution points, which it uses to store stock until orders are delivered to customers, The Wall Street Journal reported. It is not clear how many sites are being
