Awaiting the Monsoon Season
In Southeast Arizona, midday temperatures are soaring over 100 degrees. And songbirds like this Cassin's Sparrow are waiting patiently for relief from the heat. In late summer, monsoons in the Sonoran Desert occur when moist tropical air from the south collides with the intense heat and mountainous terrain of the desert. As thunderstorms rejuvenate the arid land, birds will begin to sing. It's almost as if a second spring takes place.
