High-income economies around the world are facing problems of slower growth, growing inequality, higher real estate costs, poor job prospects for young people, and mounting personal debt. In many cases these problems are blamed on the indifference, incompetence, and corruption of political and economic elites. The result is the emergence of powerful populist movements, which when in power can succumb to the temptations of flawed economic policies, nativism, and even authoritarianism. Which is worse: the problems that created populism or the problems that populism creates? How is East Asia different than the United States or Europe?
