PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) -

United Airlines has extended their schedule into July 2021, providing air travelers an opportunity to plan their trips well into next year. Kathy McCarty speaks with the airport director who says more good things are in store for the airport starting this fall.

The flying public will soon have more flight options when flying from and to Presque Isle. Scott Wardwell, Director of Presque Isle International Airport, says it’s the first time in decades that flights will have access to not one but two hubs.

“We go from six flights a week, back to our 12 flights a week. And for the first time since the early 1990s, Presque Isle will actually be served by two major airline hubs. The second hub will be Newark,” says Scott Wardwell.

Flights will continue through Dulles five days a week, with additional flights scheduled through Newark. The added hub provides flight flexibility.

He says “By being able to serve two of the large hubs, it gives us flexibility. So if - if, say, Dulles, for example, is experiencing severe weather, chances are Newark won’t be, OK? So someone has the flexibility to - to - to actually switch, OK? We’re not beholding to one major hub any more.”

The added hub also opens more one-stop connections. He says these flights serve some of the top destinations, according to airport research.

“New York is our second largest destination, in number of people who want to fly there, and Washington, D.C. is number third. So really for the first time, we have the ability to serve our second and third largest market with nonstop service,” says Wardwell.

Wardwell expects with the scheduling changes, effective October 1st, the airport will be better able to meet the flying public’s travel needs.
