COVID-19 is most commonly spread through respiratory droplets that are inhaled and cause infection. There is growing evidence these droplets can remain suspended in the air and travel distances greater than 6 feet, increasing the risk of infection in indoor environments lacking proper ventilation. Dave Newman served as the staff industrial hygienist for the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health for 18 years, until his retirement from NYCOSH in 2016. He continues to work in environmental and occupational health and safety as the principle in EOHS Associates LLC, while also serving as an industrial hygiene consultant for the New Jersey Work Environment Council. Dave is the author of numerous published peer-reviewed articles. He has served on multiple city, state, and federal technical committees and is currently a member of the World Trade Center Scientific/Technical Advisory Committee of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dave has long been an activist and representative in the Communications Workers and United Steelworkers unions.
