MARTINS FERRY — The city of Martins Ferry is taking applications to fill a key position following the recent death of Treasurer Rhonda Bernardo.

Resumes can be sent to Mayor John Davies at 35 S. Fifth St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935. The deadline to apply is Sept. 25.

Davies said the job is part-time. Bernardo was paid $565 per month for the work, which includes reconciling the city’s bank accounts.

“It’s basically a check and balance for the auditor’s office. They make sure things are balanced the way they’re supposed to,” Davies said.

Davies noted the position’s term lasts until the end of 2021. Since Bernardo ran for her elected seat as an independent, it is up to him to hire and appoint someone to fill it.

After the application deadline, he has 45 days to do so. If he does not, it will be up to council to do so.

“If she had a party affiliation it would have to be done by committee,” Davies said of the appointment.

Davies said applicants must live in Martins Ferry.

Davies noted the person appointed would have to run in next year’s primary if they planned to keep the position for another term.

Bernardo, who worked for the city for several years, died Sept. 7 due to a sudden medical condition. She was 63 years old.
