Last Week Tonight With John Oliver has been renewed for three more seasons — taking the weekly news commentary program into the year 2023, HBO CCO Casey Bloys announced on Monday.
“We’re all extremely happy to be able to continue to do our show on HBO for another three years, or until the end of the world — whichever comes first,” Oliver said in a statement.
Last Week Tonight, which airs Sundays at 11/10c, is currently on hiatus until Sept. 27, at which point it will march toward the pivotal 2020 presidential election.
“For the past seven years, John and his incredibly talented team have taken on topics that are both in the public mind and off the beaten path, always managing to shed new light on these subjects with intelligence and searing humor,” Bloys said in a statement. “We are beyond thrilled to continue this relationship for three more years.”
Taped in New York, Last Week Tonight has amassed 16 Emmys since its premiere in 2014 — and it has nine new nominations going into this Sunday’s Primetime Emmys telecast on ABC. Its most recent season earned four Emmys, including for Outstanding Variety Talk Series (for a fourth year in a row), Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming, and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Series.
Love to see it! Not sure about HBO’s track record, but I don’t really give much faith to these long-term renewals when, as we’ve seen, networks and streamers can still just up and reverse their decision/cancel. Good for J.O. and the crew!
True but it’s basically a free Emmy for HBO so it’s probably safe.
The real question is how long Oliver wants to keep doing it and how long at&t will put up with his schtick and bankrolling his expensive indulgences.
Care to elaborate about his expensive indulgences? I mean, it’s basically a one-show, so they don’t have to pay a cast. I’m sure the crew is fairly minimal. Standard writer’s room, I’d imagine. This doesn’t seem to be a very expensive show to produce, so I’d imagine that if they’re happy with the viewership on TV and online, that any “expensive indulgences” would be tolerated. But I haven’t heard anything about that. As you said, it’s basically a free awards program for the network and with low production costs, I don’t see how they wouldn’t find it worth it.
I presume it’s a reference to things like John’s purchase of the ‘Rat Erotica’ painting for $1,000. But I think @ScrubsGuy fails to take into account that it’s part of the show’s schtick and certainly covered by the show’s budget… not any sort of personal ‘indulgence’ that the network is somehow just tolerating.
Any news on how much he will be raking in (all well deserved)?
Love him. Looking forward to see what he has to say about the Trump tapes.
Well deserved sir!
As John himself would deadpan, “cool”.
Wonderful news. Seems terribly unfair to put a once-a-week show in the same Emmy category (variety talk series) as a 5-time-a-week show, though, no? I love every nominee but they’re not apples to apples in several significant ways.
I’m waiting to see him at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the John Oliver Memorial Sewer Plant.
Yep, me too. This hiatus has been painful purely because I want to see his gleeful acceptance of that offer. :)
Got you but business daddy…. Real good!
Could have left when they started hiatus, you evil slag.
Pi
Woohoo! Great news :)!
Richly deserved. Smart, funny AND important. the most consistent and watchable of *all* the late night fare during the pandemic (with an honorable mention to Seth Meyers). Color me stoked.
Yeah baby!!!!
Absolutely love him!
You’re the BEST John Oliver! Always on target and compelling in a unique and often times hilarious way! You deserve all the accolades! John Stewart knew right from the start.
Good luck on 3 more years! My wife and I can’t wait! Hope you got your name on the sewage plant as well!
I am NOT happy about this.
Oh, were you looking for more years, say 5?
I like the timely topics, this show has balls
