Description of Work


This posting will fill two (2) positions:  60022535 and 60022587.  You only have to apply once to be considered for both positions.

These are Transportation Workers 1 in our Roadside Environmental Unit.  Work is entry level in the operational area of erosion control, herbicide application for vegetation control and plant bed maintenance.  The work involves installing erosion control, mowing, vegetation control and maintaining plant material along NCDOT Right-of-Way.  This work will be subject to working on steep slopes and uneven terrain. The work also includes operation, inspection, and maintenance of equipment including trucks, spray equipment, tractors, tractor attachments, mulch blower and other similar equipment, as well as hand and power tools.

  • Experience using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.
  • Experience performing manual labor.
Additional Expectations
 
Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned.  Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor.  May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and times of emergency.  Class "A" CDL with Tanker endorsements required within 90 days of employment or be terminated.  CDL permit must be obtained within 60 days of employment.  Pre-employment drug testing required for this position.  As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.  Safety toe shoes are required.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid inmate card. 

 ***Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.***

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
