2023 is the 40th anniversary year of University Neighborhood Housing Program (UNHP), and we are kicking off the celebrations with plenty of announcements and events! This month we have some very important news about the future of our tax preparation program, exciting information to share about upcoming banking events, a reminder to apply to currently open housing lotteries on Housing Connect, and plenty of appointments that will be available throughout the coming months to help get you closer to your financial and housing goals! You can click on the shortcuts below to skip to the topics that interest you the most, and you can sign-up online for any and all of these events by completing this form.

UNHP has come to the conclusion that our space, staff capacity, and the new IRS VITA limitations prevent us from safely and professionally offering the free tax prep filing program (VITA) at Refuge House. As a result, after 15 years, this service will be permanently canceled; for everyone's safety please do not stop by our office inquiring about tax filing. Since we won't be focused on the actual filing of tax returns, we want to ensure our families are connected with other free sites, financial literacy and management. Please be sure, that despite this change, you can continue to count on us for reliable financial information and resources.
NYC has many other free IRS Volunteer Income Tax (VITA) sites, and you are likely still eligible to file your 2022 tax returns for free at an alternative location. UNHP encourages you to start preparing for the income tax season now by calling 311 to find another “NYC Free Tax Prep” location (virtual or in-person). Filers can also reach out to Ariva to learn about their service locations—those which are closest to our office are listed in the tables below. (The Bronx Library Center and P.O.T.S are in walking distance from us). Please communicate with these sites as soon as possible to schedule your appointment, since spots may fill up quickly.

If your annual income in 2022 was under $73,000 and you prefer to file your taxes at home and on your own, please visit the website myfreetaxes.com. Follow the prompts to file your return for this year. Remember you will need copies of your previous tax returns to fill in your prior Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) amount. If you need these forms, please visit the IRS website. Here you can also track your refund or pay any balance and view or print income tax forms (like the W-2). This is another great free resource.

To open a bank account, don't forget to attend the events below with Chase Bank and the Bronx People's Federal Credit Union (an expansion of LESPFCU). In order to receive your tax refund, it is important to have a free or affordable checking and/or savings accounts. At these events you can connect with a banker to see which is the best account for you.

The Bronx People's Credit Union Mobile Branch is returning to the Bronx in 2023! On Thursday, January 26th you will find the van at 45 West Tremont Avenue once again. Representatives from the Lower East Side People's Federal Credit Union (LESPFCU) will be there to answer your questions about free checking and affordable savings accounts, personal and business loans, credit card balance transfer, and ITIN applications and lending. UNHP staff will also be present with information about NYC Rent Freeze, Financial Coaching, and other housing and financial programs. Stop by to claim your same-day appointment with LESPFCU or UNHP. Are you a Chase customer? Or do you have questions about Chase accounts, loans, and fees? Then you need to attend this month's session of "Ask UNHP" on Thursday, January 26th at 4pm! Join us by Zoom to ask your questions in Spanish or English with Chase account, loan, and savings specialists. Bring your general banking questions as well as questions about Chase savings, checking, loans, credit cards, and other products. Learn about which type of account is best for you to build financial stability and avoid overdraft and account fees. All Chase customers should attend for this opportunity to review your current account and talk about aways to avoid fees (including overdraft charges)! Don't miss this chance to learn about and discuss good financial habits like credit-building and setting long-term budget goals! After the webinar you can schedule an appointment with a banker at the branch.

It's time for our monthly Housing Connect application reminder! This month in the Bronx, there is an open lottery at Melrose North Apartments located at Courtlandt and 162nd. (See details above.) Applications for this lottery close on January 30th. If eligible, submit your applications before the end of the month to be considered, and don’t forget to check out open lotteries in other boroughs on the Housing Connect website!

Are you getting Ready to Rent an apartment? Looking for a new apartment or applying for NYC’s Affordable Housing Lottery, known as Housing Connect? You will need to review your credit report, identify your household income and have a budget to manage rent and moving costs. Or maybe you are renting already but looking for help to better manage your rent payments, create a budget, or improve your credit report. UNHP has teamed up with Ariva to offer free Ready to Rent financial and housing assistance twice a month at Refuge House. If you are applying to Melrose North Apts or any other lottery, meet with a counselor and start to get ready for a selection interview. This will ensure you are a strong applicant.

Are you a NYC tenant? Are you aged 62+ or disabled? Do your household earn less than $50,000? Then you may be eligible to Freeze Your Rent! UNHP staff are available at (718) 933-2539 to answer questions and can screen you to determine if you are eligible. The longer you are in the program, the greater the benefit. If you enter the program today, continue to renew and meet all eligibility requirements, the current amount you pay for rent today could be the same in 20 years!

New York City’s Tenant Support Unit (TSU) provides support to tenants in the Bronx community that may be experiencing housing-related issues such as harassment, purposeful denial of essential services, overcharges or possible evictions. If you are experiencing any housing-related issues and would like to speak with a Tenant Support Specialist, call UNHP at (718) 933-2539 to schedule an appointment by phone or in-person. A representative will be available at our Refuge House location on 2/9, 3/9, 4/13, 5/11, and 6/8. Appointments are also available at 45 West Tremont. We encourage NYC tenants to visit TSU's Tenant Resource Portal which is available in multiple languages.

A pesar de este cambio, puede seguir contando con nosotros para obtener información y recursos financieros confiables.
