New Delhi: In a major boost for the private sector, the defence ministry has inked a ₹2,580-crore deal to manufacture indigenous Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers for the Army.

The contract, which has been in the making since 2017, will go to private sector companies L&T and Tata Aerospace and Defence. A significant portion of the work will also go to public sector enterprise BEML, which supplies trucks for the rocket launchers.

The Pinaka programme has been a homegrown success story, with two regiments already in service. Technology transfer to the private sector has been successfully executed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Out of the six new regiments, L&T has been awarded the contract to manufacture four, while the other two will be made by Tata Aerospace and Defence.

The defence ministry said that the regiments that have been ordered are — 114 Launchers with Automated Gun Aiming & Positioning System, 45 Command Posts and 330 Vehicles.

“These Six Pinaka Regiments will be operationalised along the northern and eastern borders, further enhancing the operation preparedness of our armed forces. Induction of Six Pinaka Regiments is planned to be completed by 2024,” the defence ministry said.

ET had reported in May that the Pinaka programme had been identified to be fast-tracked, both to boost the private industry during the Covid-19 crisis and utilise the money saved from delays in delivery of weapon systems currently being imported.
