Dear Stephen

The India Premier League cricket tournament is scheduled to begin on Sept. 19 and will be held in the United Arab Emirates due to the Covid-19 situation in India. Cricket is close to a religion in the country and the resumption of play is expected to lead to a tremendous surge in volume for online fantasy sports (OFS). Unlike other areas of online gaming, OFS has seen a downturn in India during the pandemic due to a lack of sporting events. However, prior to the crisis, it was far and away the fastest growing segment of the market. In our first article this week we look at OFS in India and how to ensure your business model meets local legal requirements.

For our second article, we highlight efforts by governments in the Mekong region to promote domestic tourism as a lifeline to struggling businesses while the borders remain closed. Locals have shown a strong willingness to travel in their own countries, although in most cases this doesn’t help casinos as locals are unable to gamble. We also focus on what steps are being taken to reopening international borders and at the potential timelines.

In AGB Nippon this week, we examine the impact of the resignation of long-serving Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the IR regulation process. Abe has been a key champion of the industry and his successor, even faces challenges in following in his footsteps.
