The Music Of ‘Hamilton’ Surges On The Billboard Charts Following Its Premiere On Disney+

This article is more than 3 years old.

Hamilton has been a phenomenon, the likes of which are rarely seen on Broadway, for years now. The album that comes from the show has been selling copies and racking up millions of streams since it was released, and tickets for the musical are nearly impossible to secure (when theaters are actually open, that is).

Now that anybody can watch the award-winning stage show on Disney+, interest has surged once more, and as millions tune in to view the spectacular program, plenty are also rushing to buy the CD and listen to the songs on sites like Spotify and Apple Music.

All that attention has led to the music of Hamilton enjoying perhaps its best week yet on both albums and songs-focused Billboard charts.

Albums

If Disney DIS had premiered Hamilton just a week before it did, the original Broadway cast recording would likely have topped several albums charts, but instead it’s forced to settle for second place behind late rapper Pop Smoke’s debut album Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon, which was unbeatable this time around

Hamilton rises to a new peak position of No. 2 on the Billboard 200, the most important ranking of the most-consumed titles in the country. Before this frame, it had topped out at No. 3. The set also lifts to No. 2 on both the Top Album Sales list, which only takes into account pure purchases (while the Billboard 200 includes streaming equivalents as well) and the Top Rap Albums list.

The title is steady at No. 1 on Billboard’s Cast Albums ranking, though that’s nothing new for the project. In the 250 weeks Hamilton has been present on that tally, it has led the charge for 240 turns, including this frame.

Notably, the cast recording of a musical titled 1776 also returns to the Cast Albums chart at No. 10. The show is very different from Hamilton, but they share similar subject matter, and enough fans checked it out that it reaches a new peak thanks to its slight connection to the phenomenon.

Thanks in large part to a renewed interest in the property, the Hamilton mixtape, which was released well after the cast recording rose and fell on the Billboard 200 and which features superstars from the hip-hop, rock and pop worlds covering the songs from the show, returns to the Top Album Sales ranking at No. 52 this week.

Songs

While the Hamilton album performs extremely well on a number of charts, only a handful of tracks featured on the lengthy set find their way to rankings, which shows most fans were interested in the complete project, as opposed to one or two cuts.

On the Digital Song Sales chart, which ranks the bestselling tracks of any style in the U.S., Jonathan Groff (who played the King in the show) debuts at No. 21 with “You’ll Be Back.” That cut also credits the full cast.

Over on the Rap Digital Song Sales ranking, which only focuses on those tunes that can be labeled as “rap,” two Hamilton tracks appear for the first time. New at No. 13 is “My Shot,” which officially credits Lin-Manuel Miranda, Anthony Ramos, Daveed Diggs, Okieriete Onaodowan and Leslie Odom, Jr., as well as the Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton as a group.

Just two rungs down, the title track, “Alexander Hamilton,” debuts at No. 15, the last spot on the list. That cut specifically names Lin-Manuel Miranda, Anthony Ramos, Daveed Diggs, Okieriete Onaodowan, Leslie Odom, Jr., Phillipa Soo and Christopher Jackson, as well as the Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton.
