Museums and archaeological sites all across Greece will welcome visitors on Monday night, August 3, to allow them to partake in watching the unique beauty of the August Full Moon.
Known as both the Sturgeon Moon and Crescent Moon, the former name derives from Native Americans, who would hunt the species of fish at night as a main source of food.
Similar to previous years, the event will be organized by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, with a total of 77 locations also planning on participating in the occasion. 37 sites will host exclusive private events while the rest will be open to the general public.
Logistical measures will also be handled by the Ministry to ensure that facilities will carry out necessary health and safety protocols to limit the spread of Covid-19, as well as adhere to measures in accordance with current security regulations.
Considered the most beautiful time of year, the August Full Moon will peak in size, lighting the summer night while leaving visitors with a dazzling display of its glowing luminescence.
The Full Moon is known to have played an important role during antiquity, where time was based on its phases rather than being divided into months. Also, many of the names it received throughout were based on the agricultural work during that period.
This year’s grand event will take place exclusively on the night of August 3, with the exception being a single gathering scheduled for Sunday, August 2, at the Antirrio Castle.
The theme will be modeled after the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Salamis, which occurred 25 centuries ago specifically on the hill of Kolonos and Mount Kallidromo.
