What we do

Hospice is not just a building, it’s a philosophy of care. We care for the whole person, not just their physical needs but also their emotional, spiritual, and social needs too. We care for families and friends as well, both before and after a death.

Hospice care is provided:

  • At home, wherever that may be: We have a community team – including doctors, nurses and family support – who will support patients living at home.
  • At our inpatient unit: Our 8-bed inpatient unit supports our community services with patients coming for short ‘critical care’ stays, often returning home once their symptoms have been stabilised. Care for people in their last days of life can occur in the inpatient unit, but many are supported in their own home.
  • In Aged Residential Care: We work closely with Aged Residential Care staff, providing advice and support for palliative patients.
  • In hospital: We work closely with the Hospital Palliative Care Team based at Hawke’s Bay Regional Hospital to promote consistency of care.
  • As an outpatient: Outpatient appointments are available to enable specialist medical follow up and assessment, in consultation with patients’ General Practitioners.
  • In rural communities: We work closely with health providers in Central Hawke’s Bay and Wairoa, providing advice and support for palliative patients.

What we do

At Cranford Hospice our goal is to help people make the most of the time they have left and to enable them to live each moment – whether they are at home, in an aged care facility or have come to us for a short stay in our eight-bed inpatient facility. Our dedicated team helps:

  • Manage complex symptoms (emotional, spiritual, cultural and physical)
  • People feel more comfortable about death and provide them with the emotional support they need
  • Assist family and whānau to manage any practical details that may be involved when caring for a loved one who is dying
  • Rural communities to deliver palliative care
  • Educate and support healthcare providers

Referrals can be made by any health professional or can self-refer. There are criteria to be met for a referral to be accepted. Advice is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, phone (06) 878 7047.

All services are available at no cost to the patient or their family and whānau.
